Ralph Evans (boxer)
Ralph Evans (born 20 December 1953) is a Welsh former boxer. He represented Great Britain at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, reaching the semi-final before losing to György Gedó. He received the bronze medal for the event, becoming the first Welsh boxer to win an Olympic medal. His performance was also the best finish by a Welsh boxer at an Olympic games for 40 years until it was surpassed in 2012. He chose to retire after the tournament, becoming a coach for his brother Wayne during his professional boxing career. Early life Ralph Evans was one of six children born in Tonypandy, South Wales, to parents Gwynfor and Jean Evans (née Powell). The family lived in Rosehill Terrace in Gilfach Goch until Evans was seven before moving to Waterlooville, Hampshire, near Portsmouth. Franco Udella
Franco Udella (born 25 February 1947 in Cagliari) is an Italian former world boxing champion. Amateur career Olympic games results 1968 (as a Light flyweight) *Lost to Alberto Morales (Mexico) 0-5 1972 (as a flyweight) *1st round bye *Defeated Felix Maina (Kenya) 5-0 *Lost to Boris Zoriktuyev (Soviet Union) 1-4 Pro career Udella turned pro in 1972 and won the newly created WBC light flyweight title in 1975 with a disqualification win over Valentin Martinez in the 12th round. Udella was then stripped of the title in August 1975, for failing to defend against Paraguayan Rafael Lovera, who had never fought a professional fight. The following year he challenged WBC light flyweight world champion Luis Estaba, but lost by KO in the 3rd round. He never challenged for a major title again. Johnny Owen
John Richard Owens (7 January 1956 – 4 November 1980) was a Welsh professional boxer who fought under the name Johnny Owen. His seemingly fragile appearance earned him many epithets, including the "Merthyr Matchstick" and the "Bionic Bantam". He began boxing at the age of eight and undertook a long amateur career, competing in more than 120 fights and representing Wales in competitions. He turned professional in September 1976 at the age of 20, winning his debut bout against George Sutton. Owen beat Sutton again in his sixth professional fight to win his first title, the vacant bantamweight title in the Welsh Area. Owen challenged for the British bantamweight title in his tenth professional fight in 1977. Fred Evans (boxer)
Freddie William Evans (born 4 February 1991) is a British professional boxer fighting in the 69 kg welterweight category. As an amateur, he won gold at the 2007 World Cadet Championships in Hungary and won gold for Wales at the 2011 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Ankara. He was the first Welsh boxer to achieve the feat in 86 years. Evans won Olympic silver for Great Britain in the welterweight division, losing in the final to Kazakh boxer Serik Sapiyev. His achievement made him the most successful Welsh boxer in Olympic history, surpassing the record of Ralph Evans at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He turned professional in 2015.
