Ralph Allen (1693–1764) was an English entrepreneur and philanthropist, notable for his reforms to the UK postal system. Ralph Allen
Ralph Allen (1693 – 29 June 1764) was an entrepreneur and philanthropist, who was notable for his reforms to the British postal system. Allen was born in Cornwall but moved to Bath to work in the post office, becoming the postmaster at the age of 19. He made the system more efficient and took over contracts for the mail system to cover England to the borders of Scotland and into South Wales. He bought local stone mines from his postal profits and had Prior Park built as his house to show off the versatility of the local Bath stone, using the old post office as his town house. With the architect John Wood the Elder, the stone he mined was used in the building work for the development of the Georgian city. However, the mines did not consistently make a profit and Allen subsidised them from his postal profits. After his death, he was buried in a pyramid-topped tomb in Claverton churchyard. Ralph Allen (journalist)
Ralph Allen (August 25, 1913 – December 2, 1966) was a Canadian journalist, editor, and novelist. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Allen was raised and educated in Oxbow, Saskatchewan. At sixteen he became a sports reporter for ''The Winnipeg Tribune'', before moving to Toronto's renowned ''The Globe and Mail'' where he served as a war correspondent during the Second World War. In 1946, he joined newsmagazine ''Maclean's'', becoming editor in 1950. He left Maclean's in 1960 and worked for ''The Toronto Star'' from 1964 until his death in 1966. Allen was the author of several books, including the novel ''Peace River Country'' (1958) and ''Ordeal by Fire: Canada, 1910-1945'' (1961), a history of Canada during the period of the two world wars. In 1967, Christina McCall edited a collection of Allen's newspaper and magazine columns entitled ''The Man From Oxbow''. Oxbow's town museum is named in Allen's honour. Ralph Allen (1926 – March 26, 2019) was a Canadian painter. Biography Allen was born in 1926 in Raunds, Northamptonshire, England. He graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in London (1954). In 1957, he began working at Queen’s University. From 1963 to 1973, Allen was director of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre at Queen's University. He was a professor of art in the Fine Arts department (1972–87), and finally professor emeritus on his retirement in 1987. His work in the 1990s was in partnership with the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) at Queen’s Faculty of Education, and he taught on reserves in Moose Factory and Kasabonika in 1995. Allen exhibited in 15 shows prior to 1973, receiving several Canada Council grants, gaining critical attention through publications such as ''Canadian Art''. Ralph Slack Littlewood Allen (30 June 1906 – 9 May 1981) was an English professional footballer. He played as a forward and he was born in Newburn, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland. Career Ralph Allen was playing for Dipton United when signed by Fulham in 1928. After 8 goals in 16 games for the Cottagers, he moved to Brentford in March 1931 for a fee of £275. He failed to make much of an impression on the first team during three seasons with the Bees, but did score heavily in the reserve team's London Combination title wins in 1931–32 and 1932–33, also captaining the team. He left the club to move to Charlton Athletic in October 1934 for £650. At Charlton he averaged almost a goal a game, scoring 47 goals in only 52 league appearances. He still holds the Charlton record for league goals in one season, a feat made more impressive by the fact that he didn't join them until October.
