Raleigh Firebirds
The Raleigh Firebirds are an American professional basketball team based in Raleigh, North Carolina, and a member of The Basketball League (TBL). For the 2019 season, their home games were played at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School and Robert Brickey served as its head coach.Since then, the Firebirds have played ever year, with a spanning season from March to June. During their first inaugural season, the team went 13-1 at home, and reached the TBL Eastern Conference Finals. The Firebirds also had the number one overall pick in the 2019 TBL Draft, and selected Julian Harris. Harris would win Rookie of the Year, and go on to play basketball overseas. John Chavis Memorial Park
John Chavis Memorial Park, also known as Chavis Park, is a public park spanning 28.87 acres near Shaw University in the South Park neighborhood of Southeast Raleigh, North Carolina. Robert Charles MacKinnon Jr. (born September 24, 1960) is an American basketball coach. He is the interim head coach of the Raleigh Firebirds of The Basketball League. Previously, he served as the head coach of the Colorado 14ers, Springfield Armor, Los Angeles D-Fenders, and Texas Legends in the NBA G League. Coaching career Mackinnon began his coaching career in 1982 as an assistant coach for his alma mater King's College. Robert Brickey (born December 26, 1967) is an American basketball coach who is currently the head coach of the Fayetteville Stingers of The Basketball League. Previously he was the head coach of the Raleigh Firebirds. High school career Brickey attended E.E. Smith High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and as a junior led the Golden Bulls to the championship game, where they were defeated by Hunter Huss High School. In 1986, as a senior, Brickey was named North Carolina Mr. Basketball. College career After graduating, he went on to play basketball at Duke from 1986 to 1990, where he was a part of three final four teams and started in the national championship game in 1990. David John Magley (born November 24, 1959) is a retired American basketball player and coach. He is currently the president of The Basketball League after serving as commissioner of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC). Prior to becoming an NBLC executive, Magley was head coach of Bradenton Christian School in Bradenton, Florida, for 11 years and then led the Brampton A's for two seasons. He played basketball at South Bend LaSalle High School. Following his senior year, Magley was named Indiana Mr. Basketball, beating Randy Wittman and Ted Kitchel for the award, and was selected to the Academic All-State and Parade All American teams. Dave was drafted with the fifth pick in the second round of the 1982 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Raleigh Cougars was a United States Basketball League team based in Raleigh, North Carolina from 1997 to 1999. The team included many well known players from local colleges. The team played its home games at Dorton Arena. The Cougars were owned by Clyde "The Glide" Austin, a former Harlem Globetrotters and North Carolina State basketball star, and Cozell McQueen, a former North Carolina State and Euroleague player. History In 1997 the team finished with a 14–12 record and advanced to the semifinals of the USBL Postseason Festival, where they lost to Atlantic City. United States Basketball League
The United States Basketball League (USBL) was a professional men's spring basketball league. The league was formed in 1985 and ceased operations in 2008. The USBL started in 1985 as one of the first basketball leagues to play a late-spring to early-summer schedule. The league quickly became known as a development league for players, with many players moving up to the National Basketball Association, NBA and many more playing in Europe after stints here. In 1996, the league made a stock offering, a rarity among sports leagues. However, in later years, the league declined as rival leagues appeared and USBL had a tougher time replacing teams that folded.
