Rajkumari Singh
Rajkumari Singh (13 October 1923 – 1979) was an Indo-Caribbean, Guyanese writer, political activist, educator, and cultural leader. She is the author of the essay "I am a Coolie". Singh was the first published Indian woman from the Caribbean and although she never used the term "feminist," her life's work contributed to feminist literature of the Caribbean, in addition to her advancement of a national Guyanese culture of integration while still upholding Indian culture within this new construct. Poetry Her iconic poem, "Per Ajie," epitomizes the journey of Indians to the Caribbean, through the eyes of an Indo-Caribbean visualizing her paternal great-grandmother making the voyage on one of the historic migratory ships headed for Guyana. Indo-Caribbean
Indo-Caribbeans or Indian-Caribbeans are Indian people in the Caribbean who are descendants of the Jahaji Indian indentured laborers brought by the British, Dutch, and French during the colonial era from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. A minority are descendants of Indians or other South Asians who immigrated as entrepreneurs, businesspeople, merchants, engineers, doctors, and other professional occupations beginning in the mid-20th century. Most Indo-Caribbean people live in the English-speaking Caribbean nations, the Dutch-speaking Suriname and the French overseas departments of Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana, with smaller numbers in other Caribbean countries and, following further migration, in North America and Europe. Alice Bhagwandai Singh
Alice Bhagwandai Singh (April 22, 1891 – November 2, 1970) was a Surinamese activist, feminist, and community organizer. She was the first Caribbean woman of Indian descent to write an autobiography about her family's immigration to the region. Early life Singh was born in Suriname (then Dutch Guiana), and raised in the capital, Paramaribo. Her grandmother, Phularjee, was originally from Bengal. Her father, Sital, who was a community leader and organizer, was a role model to her as she grew up. Singh's mother grew up in Dutch Guiana in a middle-class Christian Indian family, but defied her family's expectations to marry Singh's father. She had two brothers and a sister. Singh grew up speaking Hindi at home, and was educated at a nearby convent. While working as a typist at the Government Immigration Office, Singh met Jung Bahadur Singh.
