Rajani Duganna
Rajani Duganna is an Indian politician and former Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation. She took office on 26 February 2010, with B. Rajendra Kumar as Deputy Mayor. She is the fifth female to have become mayor of the city corporation, as well as its 24th mayor, since the corporation's establishment in 1984. She is a BILLAVA (POOJARY) and belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Duganna was succeeded as Mayor by her cousin Praveen Kumar Praveen Kumar (, born 2 October 1986) is a former Indian cricketer who bowled right-hand medium-pace. The Mangalore City Corporation is the municipal corporation responsible for overseeing the local administration of the Indian city of Mangalore and it's suburbs, which are a major urban area and the most important port city of karnataka state. BILLAVA (POOJARY)
The Billava, Billoru, Biruveru people are an ethnic group of India. They are found traditionally in Tulu Nadu region and engaged in toddy tapping, cultivation and other activities. They have used both missionary education and Sri Narayana Guru's reform movement to upgrade themselves. Etymology and origins L. K. Ananthakrishna Iyer recounted the community's belief that ''billava'' means ''bowmen'' and that it "applied to the castemen who were largely employed as soldiers by the native rulers of the district". Edgar Thurston had reached a similar conclusion in 1909. The Billavas are first recorded in inscriptions dating from the fifteenth century AD but Amitav Ghosh notes that "... this is merely an indication of their lack of social power; there is every reason to suppose that all the major Tuluva castes share an equally long history of settlement in the region".
