Rainier Mountaineering
RMI Expeditions, also known as Rainier Mountaineering Inc. (RMI), is a mountain guide company based in Ashford, Washington founded in 1969 by Jerry Lynch and Lou Whittaker. It leads mountaineering, ski mountaineering, and ice climbing trips on Mount Rainier and the Seven Summits. RMI is owned and operated by Peter Whittaker, the son of Lou Whittaker and the nephew of Jim Whittaker, who was the first American mountaineer to successfully reach the summit of Mount Everest. Peter Whittaker has been at the head of RMI since the late 1990s. Accreditation RMI is accredited by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA). Ashford, Washington
Ashford is a census-designated place (CDP) mostly within Pierce County, Washington, United States. Its population was 217 as of the 2010 census. The town is west of the main entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. Surrounding mountains and the narrow Nisqually River valley are heavily forested. Some of Ashford is across the Nisqually River in Lewis County. History Ashford was named for Walter A. Ashford, who homesteaded there in 1888. The area was first settled by the Upper Nisqually nation, a Salish tribe. Geography Ashford is located in southeastern Pierce County in the Cascade Range. It is on the north side of the Nisqually River and is bisected by State Route 706, the main access road to Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park. Tod Leiweke (born January 12, 1960, in St. Louis, Missouri) is an American sports executive who is currently part-owner, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Seattle Kraken. Career In the early 1980s, Leiweke was vice president of the New York Arrows indoor soccer team. Leiweke was the chief executive officer of the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League, owned by Paul Allen, and the Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer. Roger Stokoe Goodell (born February 19, 1959) is an American businessman who is currently the commissioner of the National Football League (NFL). On August 8, 2006, Goodell was chosen to succeed retiring commissioner Paul Tagliabue. Edmund Viesturs (born June 22, 1959) is a high-altitude mountaineer, corporate speaker, and well known author in the mountain climbing community. He is the only American to have climbed all 14 of the world's eight-thousander mountain peaks, and only the fifth person to do so without using supplemental oxygen. Along with Apa Sherpa, he has summitted peaks of over 8,000 meters on 21 occasions, including Mount Everest seven times. Lou Whittaker
Lou Whittaker (born February 10, 1929) is a mountaineer, mountain guide, and entrepreneur. He and his twin brother, Jim Whittaker, an equally renowned mountaineer and guide, were born and raised in Seattle. Besides his worldwide mountain climbing experience, Whittaker became the most experienced glacier-travel guide by climbing Mount Rainier with over 250 summits. He also established Rainier Mountaineering, developed a group of successful climbing-related businesses at the Rainier Base Camp in Ashford, adjacent to Mount Rainier National Park. Melissa Arnot
Melissa Arnot Reid (born December 18, 1983) is an American mountaineer. She has climbed to the summit of Mount Everest six times. Life and career Arnot was raised just outside Glacier National Park in Whitefish, Montana. After college, she began living out of her car to save money and climb mountains. She first climbed Mount Rainier in 2001 and called it a "watershed moment". Arnot began teaching wilderness medicine in 2002 and began guiding on Mount Rainier with Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. in 2004. By 2006 she was a lead guide. Since 2001, she has summited Rainier more than 90 times. She is a certified Wilderness EMT and teaches Wilderness EMT courses for Remote Medical International.
