Rainbow Peak
Rainbow Peak () is located in the Livingston Range, Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The namesake Rainbow Glacier is immediately east and northeast of Rainbow Peak. Rainbow Peak is the ninth-tallest mountain in Glacier National Park and rises over above Bowman Lake. From the parking lot at the Bowman Lake Campground, the elevation gain is . In July 1998 the peak was the site of the death of two climbers who were climbing a snow-covered chimney when a cornice collapsed, causing the two climbers to fall to their deaths. Flathead County is in the U.S. state of Montana. At the 2020 census, its population was 104,357, making it the state's fourth most populous county. Its county seat is Kalispell. Livingston Range
The Livingston Range is a mountain range located primarily in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana, and in the extreme southeastern section of the Canadian province of British Columbia. The range is long and wide. Over 15 summits exceed above sea level, and the highest point is Kintla Peak at . (While these elevations are not particularly high for North American mountains, they are high compared to the roughly 4,000 foot (1,200 m) elevation of the nearby valleys, making for particularly dramatic peaks.) The Livingston Range was initially uplifted beginning 170 million years ago when the Lewis Overthrust fault pushed an enormous slap of precambrian rocks thick, wide and long over newer rocks of the cretaceous period. Rainbow Glacier is in Glacier National Park (U.S.), Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The glacier is situated immediately to the east of Rainbow Peak at an elevation between and above sea level. The glacier covers an area of approximately and has visible crevasses in satellite imagery. Bowman Lake (Montana)
Bowman Lake is in the northwestern portion of Glacier National Park in Montana. The lake is accessed via a unpaved road from the small town of Polebridge. At , Bowman Lake is the third largest lake in the park, after Lake McDonald and Saint Mary Lake. The campground is located close to the shore, and the trees along the site provide privacy. Day users have access to the picnic ground, and there are several hiking trails within the area. Fishing, canoeing, and kayaking are also popular on the lake which is of a glacially cold temperature. Motorized boats of 10 horsepower (7 kW) or less are allowed on the lake. Because of the long, bumpy road, recreational vehicles and truck/trailer combinations are not recommended. Snow Cornice
A snow cornice or simply cornice (from the Italian cornice meaning "ledge") is an overhanging edge of snow on a ridge or the crest of a mountain and along the sides of gullies. Formation A snow cornice forms by wind blowing snow over sharp terrain breaks (e.g. the crest of the mountain) where it attaches and builds out horizontally. This build-up is most common on the steeper and leeward sides of mountains. Cornices are extremely dangerous and travelling above or below them should be avoided. When a cornice ''collapses'', it breaks in from the cornice to the top of the peak; even being on the snow on top of rock exposes the alpinist to hazard in this situation. The best practice in mountaineering is to stay far enough back from the edge so as not to be able to see the drop, as an approximate metric of exposure.
