The first railway in colonial South Australia was a line from the port of Goolwa on the River Murray to an ocean harbour at Port Elliot, which first operated in December 1853, before its completion in May 1854. Today the state has broad gauge suburban railways in Adelaide, a number of country freight lines, and key standard gauge links to other states. Port Wakefield (formerly Port Henry) is a town at the mouth of the River Wakefield, at the head of the Gulf St Vincent in South Australia. It was the first government town to be established north of the state capital, Adelaide. Port Wakefield is situated from the Adelaide city centre on the Port Wakefield Highway section of the A1 National Highway. Mount Gambier Railway Station
Mount Gambier railway station was the junction station for the Naracoorte– Millicent and Mount Gambier-Heywood lines in the South Australian city of Mount Gambier. It was last used in 2006, and has since been transformed into a public community space. History In 1879, a narrow gauge line opened from Beachport (Rivoli Bay North) through Millicent to Mount Gambier. In 1887, the Mount Gambier railway line was constructed to Naracoorte (connecting to the Kingston-Naracoorte railway line) and Wolseley, where it joined the Adelaide-Wolseley line. On 28 November 1917, a broad gauge line opened from Mount Gambier to Heywood near Portland. In the 1950s, the narrow gauge lines were converted to broad gauge. Wolseley, South Australia
Wolseley (formerly Tatiara) is a small South Australian town near the Victorian border. It is five kilometres south of the Dukes Highway and 13 kilometres east of Bordertown. It was first proclaimed a town in 1884. The 2016 Australian census which was conducted in August 2016 reports that Wolseley had a population of 180 people. Terowie Railway Station
Terowie railway station was located on the Roseworthy–Peterborough line in the South Australian town of Terowie. History Terowie station opened in 1880 when the broad gauge line from Adelaide was completed. In 1881, it became a junction station when the narrow gauge line from Peterborough opened. This resulted in Terowie becoming an important transshipment point on the South Australian Railways network. Hamley Bridge
Hamley Bridge is a community in South Australia located at the junction of the Gilbert River (South Australia), Gilbert and Light River (South Australia), Light rivers, as well as the site of a former railway junction. The BHP Whyalla Tramway is a gauge heavy-haul railway on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Port Broughton is a small South Australian town located at the northern extent of the Yorke Peninsula on the east coast of Spencer Gulf.
