Rail Transportation In Nigeria
Railways in Nigeria consist of a 3,505 km Cape gauge national railway network and 669 km of standard gauge. The Cape gauge network is in poor condition due to lack of maintenance. In 2019, the single operational standard gauge line from Abuja to Kaduna generated as much revenue as the entire Cape gauge railway network combined. The Nigerian government plans to extend the standard gauge to replace most of the Western Line, while the Eastern Line will be rehabilitated as a Cape gauge line. All trains in Nigeria are operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation. The Nigerian Railway Corporation recorded record revenues of 2.12 billion naira (approximately €4.664 million) in the first half of 2021, an increase of 31% over the same period in 2019, which recorded the previous record revenue. Itakpe is a town in Kogi State, Nigeria. The Itakpe Hills in and around the town of Itakpe contain very pure deposits of iron ore. The National Iron Ore Mining Company is located here. It supplies the steel works of Ajaokuta and Aladja, as well as producing ore for export. Lagos–Kano Standard Gauge Railway
The Lagos–Kano Standard Gauge Railway is a -long standard gauge railway under construction in Nigeria. Once complete, the railway will connect the Atlantic Ocean port city of Lagos to Kano, near the border with Niger, passing through the national capital of Abuja. The railway replaces the Cape gauge Western Line built by the British in 1896–1927, which has a lower design capacity and is in a deteriorated condition. Two segments of the railway have been completed and begun passenger trains. The segment between Abuja and Kaduna officially opened in July 2016. The segment between Lagos and Ibadan was flagged off in June 2021. Warri–Itakpe Railway
The Ujevwu–Itakpe Railway is a standard gauge railway in Nigeria that connects the port city of Warri to the inland town of Itakpe. Construction began in 1987 on an industrial railway to supply the Ajaokuta Steel Mill with iron ore and coal. After a protracted construction period of more than 30 years, the railway was finally inaugurated in 2020 as a mixed freight and passenger line. Construction is underway on an extension to Abuja, where it will connect to the Lagos–Kano Standard Gauge Railway. Baro-Kano Railway Station
Baro-Kano railway built between 1908 and 1911 by government of the Northern Nigeria Protectorate was opened to traffic in 1912, to serve as the main rail transport facility from Baro in present Niger state to the emporium of Hausa land Kano (in present Kano state). The first railway built in Nigeria was the Lagos–Kano Railway built by the Lagos Colony (later Southern Nigeria Protectorate). The Baro-Kano Railway and the Lagos Government Railway was later amalgamated by the British colonial government represented by Frederick Lugard in 1914 to form a national system known as Nigerian Railway Department (which later became Nigerian Railway Corporation in the 1950s). Baro is a small port town on the Niger in present Niger State (central Nigeria). A crater on Mars has been named after Baro. Transport Baro is also a railway town situated approximately 400 miles (650 km) up the Niger River at the limit of river navigation, subject to dredging. The railway terminal or station is on bar 0 (later corrupted to baro) which was the starting point of the Baro to Kano railway.
