Rafael Álvarez (diver)
Rafael Álvarez Serrano (born 29 October 1971 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas) is a retired male diver from Spain, best known for winning the bronze medals at the 1997 European Championships in Seville, Spain and at the World University Games in 1999. He represented his native country in four consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1988. Diving is the sport of jumping or falling into water from a platform or springboard, usually while performing acrobatics. Diving is an internationally recognized sport that is part of the Olympic Games. In addition, unstructured and non-competitive diving is a recreational pastime. Competitors possess many of the same characteristics as gymnasts and dancers, including strength, flexibility, kinaesthetic judgment and air awareness. The name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad".
