Rafael Pedroza
Rafael Pedroza (born March 27, 1955) is a retired Panamanian boxer and was briefly a super-flyweight world champion in 1981. Pedroza turned professional in 1974; he lost his first two attempts at a world title in 1977 and 1979 but became the WBA super-flyweight world champion on December 5, 1981 after his points victory against Argentine Gustavo Ballas. Pedroza was beaten in his first defense by Jiro Watanabe in what ended up being his final bout. He is a cousin of hall-of-fame boxer Eusebio Pedroza. Light flyweight, also known as junior flyweight or super strawweight, is a weight class in boxing. Professional boxing The weight limit at light flyweight in professional boxing is 108 pounds (49 kilograms). When New York legalized boxing in 1920, the law stipulated a "junior flyweight" class, with a weight limit of 99 pounds. When the National Boxing Association was formed in 1921, it also recognized this weight class. However, on January 19, 1922, the NBA decided to withdraw recognition of the junior flyweight division. On December 31, 1929, the New York State Athletic Commission also abolished the junior flyweight class. No champion had been crowned in this division prior to its abolition. Afro-Panamanians are Panamanians of African descent. The Afro-Panamanian population can be mainly broken into one of two categories "Afro-Colonials", Afro-Panamanians descended from slaves brought to Panama during the colonial period, and "Afro-Antilleans," West Indian immigrant-descendants with origins in Trinidad and Tobago, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Belize, The Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica, and Guyana whose ancestors were brought in to build the Panama Canal. Eusebio Pedroza
Eusebio Pedroza (March 2, 1956 – March 1, 2019) was a Panamanian boxer who held the WBA and lineal featherweight championship from 1978 to 1985, having defended the title against 18 different contenders, more than any other boxer in featherweight history. His cousin, Rafael Pedroza, was a world champion also, in the junior bantamweight division, although Rafael's reign as world champion was short-lived. Eusebio Pedroza died one day before his 63rd birthday. Biography Pedroza started out as a professional boxer on December 1, 1973, with a four-round knockout win over Julio Garcia. His first 15 bouts were all in Panama. He went 14-1 over that span of fights, including a win over Jacinto Fuentes, a boxer who would later draw and lose to Wilfredo Gómez.
