The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent agency of the United States federal government that regulates communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable across the United States. The FCC maintains jurisdiction over the areas of broadband access, fair competition, radio frequency use, media responsibility, public safety, and homeland security. The FCC was formed by the Communications Act of 1934 to replace the radio regulation functions of the Federal Radio Commission. The FCC took over wire communication regulation from the Interstate Commerce Commission. WAUS
WAUS (90.7 Hertz, MHz) is a nonprofit organization, non-commercial FM radio, FM radio station city of license, licensed to Berrien Springs, Michigan, and broadcasting to the Michiana and South Bend metropolitan area. It is owned by Andrews University and airs a classical music radio format. It carries NPR News or BBC News at the top of most hours with some Christian radio, religious programming on the weekends. History WAUS first sign-on, signed on the air on January 10, 1971. It was originally powered at 17,000 watts, about half its current output. The original station manager was Mike Mottler, with Carsten Thomsen as the operations director. But Andrews University traces its involvement in broadcasting back to the 1920s. According to its website, an experimental radio station with the call sign 8AZ went on the air at Emmanuel Missionary College (Andrews University's previous name) in 1921. WBCT (93.7 MHz, "B-93") is a commercial FM radio station licensed to Grand Rapids, Michigan and owned by iHeartMedia. The studios and offices are located at 77 Monroe Center in Downtown Grand Rapids. The station has had a country music radio format since July 24, 1992. WBCT's transmitter is at the WWMT TV Tower in Yankee Springs Township near Gun Lake. WBCT has the distinction of broadcasting with the highest power of any North American radio station, at 320,000 watts effective radiated power (ERP). The antenna is approximately up the structure. The company started in radio and expanded into digital media toward the end of the 2000s, starting with the acquisition of the MOG Music Network. WBCK (95.3 FM) is a radio station in Battle Creek, Michigan, United States, owned by Townsquare Media. WBCK has a news-talk format. History WBCK began broadcasting at 1000 watts on AM 930 in Battle Creek and surrounding areas of West Michigan. It featured a full-service MOR/adult contemporary format for years, evolving into news/talk by the mid-1990s. Two brothers, Robert and David Holmes formed Michigan Broadcasting Company, and it went on the air at 8:00 pm on Friday, July 9, 1948. After some comments on the new radio station from local dignitaries, the owners, and the staff, the station went into a broadcast of a Detroit Tigers game. WBCK was originally an affiliate of the Mutual Broadcasting System but in recent years has been a FOX News radio affiliate.
