The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent agency of the United States federal government that regulates communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable across the United States. The FCC maintains jurisdiction over the areas of broadband access, fair competition, radio frequency use, media responsibility, public safety, and homeland security. The FCC was formed by the Communications Act of 1934 to replace the radio regulation functions of the Federal Radio Commission. The FCC took over wire communication regulation from the Interstate Commerce Commission. WAAF (AM)
WAAF (910 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Scranton, Pennsylvania. Owned by Audacy, Inc., WAAF airs a talk radio format. It is powered at 900 watts by day and 440 watts at night, using a non-directional antenna at all times. The transmitter is at the corner of Penn Avenue and Spruce Street, on the Scranton Times Building. In addition to a standard analog transmission, WAAF's programming is available online via Audacy. WAAF is one of four simulcast radio stations in Northeastern Pennsylvania that call themselves ''WILK Newsradio'', along with 103.1 WILK-FM in Avoca, 1300 WODS in West Hazleton and 980 WILK in Wilkes-Barre. WAMO (660 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, and serving the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. It broadcasts an Urban Contemporary radio format. It is owned by Martz Communications Group and is operated by Audacy, Inc., under a local marketing agreement (LMA). By day, WAMO is powered at 1,400 watts. But it must protect the nighttime signal of Class A WFAN in New York City on the same frequency. So WAMO is a daytimer, required to go off the air at night. Adult contemporary music (AC) is a form of radio-played popular music, ranging from 1960s vocal and 1970s soft rock music to predominantly ballad-heavy music of the present day, with varying degrees of easy listening, pop, soul, R&B, quiet storm and rock influence. Adult contemporary is generally a continuation of the easy listening and soft rock style that became popular in the 1960s and 1970s with some adjustments that reflect the evolution of pop/rock music. Adult contemporary tends to have lush, soothing and highly polished qualities where emphasis on melody and harmonies is accentuated. It is usually melodic enough to get a listener's attention, and is inoffensive and pleasurable enough to work well as background music. WALY (103.9 FM, "WALY 103.9") is an American radio station serving the Altoona, Pennsylvania, area. The station is owned by Seven Mountains Media. currently playing an adult contemporary format. History The station began playing a format of Top 40 and middle of the road music in its early days, first signing on as WHGM on March 28, 1970, more than three and a half years after the construction permit had been issued in the spring of 1966. WHGM was originally owned by John Powley, whose interests were primarily in television. Powley owned a financial stake in KHFI AM-FM-TV in Austin, Texas and would sign on an ABC-TV affiliate in Altoona six years later, known as WOPC-TV. On New Year's Eve of 1986, the station was sold to Mid-Atlantic Radio, Inc., a company headed by Gregory Guise. WAEB-FM (104.1 MHz, "B104") is a Top 40 (CHR) radio station licensed to Allentown, Pennsylvania. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. and broadcasts a contemporary hit radio format. History WAEB-FM signed on in 1961, initially simulcasting the Top 40 format airing on WAEB (790 AM). In the late 1960s, WAEB-FM separated from WAEB and went through several formats before eventually becoming a country music station with the WXKW call sign. In April 1985, the station reverted to the WAEB-FM call sign and switched to a soft adult contemporary format, playing a small number of adult standards artists initially as well as a few new songs. WAEB is a news, talk and sports radio station in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania. WAEB broadcasts at 790 kHz AM. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. History WAEB began operations in 1949. The station was sold to Rust Broadcasting in 1957, adopting a Top 40 format and the slogan ''Music Radio 79 WAEB''.
