Racquetball World Championships
The World Racquetball Championships is the top international racquetball competition organized by the International Racquetball Federation (IRF). History The first event was held in 1981 as part of the 1981 World Games. The second World Championships were in 1984, and they have been a biannual event since then with the exception of the COVID-19 pandemic period, which delayed the 2020 event by one year. Worlds have been held in 13 countries across four continents: North and South America as well as Asia and Europe. The United States has hosted Worlds most often - 4 times, though not since 1996, followed by Mexico, 3 times, and twice each in Canada, the Dominican Republic, and South Korea. The 2022 World Championships were held in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, which was the first time Worlds was in Mexico since 2000, when it was also held in San Luis Potosi. Racquetball
Racquetball is a racquet sport and a team sport played with a hollow rubber ball on an indoor or outdoor court. Joseph Sobek invented the modern sport of racquetball in 1950, adding a stringed racquet to paddleball in order to increase velocity and control. Unlike most racquet sports, such as tennis and badminton, there is no net to hit the ball over, and, unlike squash, no tin (out of bounds area at the bottom of front wall) to hit the ball above. Also, the court's walls, floor, and ceiling are legal playing surfaces, with the exception of court-specific designated hinders being out-of-bounds. Racquetball is played between various players on a team who try to bounce the ball with the racquet onto the ground so it hits the wall, so that an opposing team’s player cannot bounce it back to the wall. 2018 Racquetball World Championships
The International Racquetball Federation's 19th Racquetball World Championships were held in San José, Costa Rica from August 10–18, 2018. Originally, the event was to be held in Haining, China, but on March 17, 2018 the IRT announced via its Facebook page that the venue will be changed due to complications. Cali, Colombia was the first alternative choice, but there were complications there as well, so on June 16, 2018, the IRF announced via Facebook that San Jose, Costa Rica will host Worlds. Rodrigo Montoya of Mexico won men's singles for the first time, defeating the USA's Charlie Pratt in the final. In Women's singles, Gabriela Martinez of Guatemala upset the three-time defending champion Mexican Paola Longoria to win gold. 2016 Racquetball World Championships
The International Racquetball Federation's 18th Racquetball World Championships were held in Cali, Colombia from July 15 to 23, 2016. This was the first time Colombia has hosted Worlds, and the first time Worlds have been in South America since 1998, when Cochabamba, Bolivia hosted the event. American Rocky Carson and Mexican Paola Longoria are the incumbent champions in men's and women's singles, respectively. 2014 Racquetball World Championships
The International Racquetball Federation's 17th Racquetball World Championships were held in Burlington, Ontario, Canada from June 14 to 21, 2014. This was the second time Worlds were in Canada. Previously, they were in Montreal in 1992. American Rocky Carson and Mexican Paola Longoria were the incumbent champions in men's and women's singles, respectively, and both successfully defended their titles. Longoria was also the incumbent champion in women's doubles with Samantha Salas and they also successfully defended their title. Fellow Mexicans Alvaro Beltran and Javier Moreno were the defending champions in men's doubles, but Mexico didn't make the podium in Burlington. 2012 Racquetball World Championships
The 16th Racquetball World Championships were held in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) from August 3 to 11, 2012, with players from 22 different countries. The championships had two parts. First, individual competitions for men's and women's singles and doubles, which took place over the first four days. Then following an off day, there was a team competition on the last three days in which countries competed against each other in a best of three match format involving two singles matches and a doubles match. This is the second time the Racquetball World Championships were held in Santo Domingo. The previous time was 2006. The 2012 World Racquetball Championships were also the qualifying event for the 2013 World Games in Cali, Colombia. The top 16 players in Santo Domingo will qualify to compete in Cali. 2010 Racquetball World Championships
The 15th Racquetball World Championships were held in Seoul (South Korea) from August 13 to 21, 2010, with 16 men's national teams and 11 women's national teams; and several players in the Singles and Doubles competition. The incumbent champions in men's and women's singles were Americans Rocky Carson and Rhonda Rajsich, respectively, and they successfully defended their titles in Seoul. In doubles, the Americans successfully defended the men's doubles title, and Mitch Williams was part of the winning team again, although in 2010 he won with Ben Croft while in 2008 Jason Thoerner was his partner.
