Rachel Mordecai Lazarus
Rachel Mordecai Lazarus (July 1, 1788 – June 23, 1838) was an American educator and correspondent with the children's writer Maria Edgeworth. Early life and education Rachel Mordecai was born in Virginia, the eldest daughter and second child of Jacob Mordecai and his first wife, Judith Myers. She was raised in Warrenton, North Carolina, where her father worked at a boys' school, then opened his own girls' school in 1809, with 21-year-old Rachel as one of the school's teachers. Rachel taught at her father's school until 1818. Correspondence with Maria Edgeworth Rachel Mordecai first wrote to author Maria Edgeworth in 1815. Mordecai studied and admired the enlightened educational writings of Edgeworth and her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, and was disappointed by the unflattering stereotypical portrait of a Jewish character in Edgeworth's ''The Absentee'' (1812). Maria Edgeworth
Maria Edgeworth (1 January 1768 – 22 May 1849) was a prolific Anglo-Irish novelist of adults' and children's literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children's literature and was a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe. She held views on estate management, politics and education, and corresponded with some of the leading literary and economic writers, including Sir Walter Scott and David Ricardo. Jacob Mordecai
Jacob Mordecai (April 11, 1762 – September 4, 1838) was an educational pioneer in Colonial America, having established the ''Warrenton Female Seminary'', also known as ''Mordecai’s Female Academy''. Biography Mordecai was the son of Moses, a German Jew who emigrated from Bonn to London, and Esther Mordecai (born Elizabeth Whitlock), an English-born convert to Judaism. His parents were observant Jews who in 1760 emigrated from London to Philadelphia. His parents chose to emigrate to Philadelphia because his father was a convict, one of several hundred Jewish convicts that the English authorities had encouraged to move to the American colonies. He attended private schools, receiving a classical education. At age 13, Mordecai served as a rifleman when the Continental Congress was resident in Philadelphia and later helped supply the Continental Army as a clerk to David Franks, the Jewish quartermaster to General George Washington. Marx Edgeworth Lazarus (February 6, 18221896) was an American individualist anarchist, Fourierist, and free-thinker. Lazarus was a practicing doctor of homeopathy who also wrote a number of books and articles, some under the pseudonym "Edgeworth". His works include ''Love vs. Marriage'' (1852) and ''Land Tenure: Anarchist View'' (1889). He was the only son of Rachel Mordecai Lazarus, who had an extensive correspondence with the Anglo-Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth.
