Phio Pharmaceuticals Inc. is a US biotechnology company focused on the field of siRNA. Formerly known as RXi Pharmaceuticals, the company's name was changed to Phio Pharmaceuticals in 2018. Background Phio was co-founded by Nobel Laureate Craig Mello, who was awarded the Nobel prize in 2006 for his discovery of RNAi, with the intent to develop RNAi therapies. The company was originally named RXi Pharmaceuticals. RXi went public and in 2009 the company filed a patent for its unique INTASYL technology, a self-delivering RNAi platform. Craig Mello
Craig Cameron Mello (born October 18, 1960) is an American biologist and professor of molecular medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, along with Andrew Z. Fire, for the discovery of RNA interference. This research was conducted at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and published in 1998. Mello has been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator since 2000.
