R/V ''Rachel Carson'' is a research vessel owned and operated by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), named in honor of the marine biologist and writer, Rachel Carson. Ship history The ship was built in 2003 as an offshore supply and towing vessel, and was first operated by Lytal Enterprises Inc. as the ''Lytal Team''. After Lytal was acquired by Odyssea Marine Inc. In January 2006 she was renamed ''Odyssea Team''. Rachel Louise Carson (May 27, 1907 – April 14, 1964) was an American marine biologist, writer, and conservationist whose influential book ''Silent Spring'' (1962) and other writings are credited with advancing the global environmental movement. Carson began her career as an aquatic biologist in the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, and became a full-time nature writer in the 1950s. Her widely praised 1951 bestseller '' The Sea Around Us'' won her a U.S. National Book Award, recognition as a gifted writer and financial security. In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is a private, non-profit oceanographic research center in Moss Landing, California. MBARI was founded in 1987 by David Packard, and is primarily funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
