Garage rock (sometimes called garage punk or 60s punk) is a raw and energetic style of rock and roll that flourished in the mid-1960s, most notably in the United States and Canada, and has experienced a series of subsequent revivals. Thee Michelle Gun Elephant (often abbreviated to TMGE) was a Japanese garage rock band formed in 1991. History The band was formed in 1991,Strong, Martin C. (2003) ''The Great Indie Discography'', Canongate, , p. 1025-6 while Chiba, Ueno, and Kuhara were students at Tokyo's Meiji Gakuin University. They later drew influence from The Roosters. Their unusual name originated when a friend mispronounced the title of an early jam session recording; featuring cover songs of Thee Headcoats (one of the band's main influences) and from The Damned's album ''Machine Gun Etiquette''. Some years later Futoshi Abe joined the band. Blankey Jet City was a Japanese rock trio from Aichi Prefecture, active from 1987 to 2000. It consisted of Kenichi Asai on vocals and guitar, Toshiyuki Terui on bass, and Tatsuya Nakamura on drums. History Blankey Jet City was formed in 1987, in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Their career then officially started in 1990, when they appeared on a popular TBS television show for amateur bands that August. Their performances attracted the attention of the major record labels, and the band then decided to sign a record contract with Toshiba EMI, who sent the band to London to record their first album. The Birthday is a Japanese garage rock band formed by Yusuke Chiba and members of his previous bands, Rosso and Thee Michelle Gun Elephant. History In June, 2006, Chiba and Imai announced the release of Rosso's album ''Emissions'', and also that Rosso would go on a hiatus. Immediately after The Birthday was formed and in August of the same year, their first single ''Stupid'' was released.
