RNAS Eglinton (HMS Gannet)
Royal Naval Air Station Eglinton or RNAS Eglinton was a Royal Naval Air Station located north east of Eglinton, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It opened as a Royal Air Force Station (RAF Eglinton) in 1941, before being transferred to the Fleet Air Arm in May 1943. The airfield was operational between 1941 and 1966. History RAF Eglinton use The Royal Naval Air Station has its origins in the early Second World War when in 1941 RAF Eglinton was established as the home to No. 133 Squadron RAF which flew Hawker Hurricane fighters in defence of Londonderry. In 1942 the airfield was occupied by No. 41 Squadron RAF when it moved in on 22 September flying the Supermarine Spitfire VB before moving to RAF Llanbedr on 20 September 1942. Eglinton, County Londonderry
Eglinton (formerly known as Muff) is a village in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It lies east-north-east of Derry, to which it serves as a sleeper village, and west-south-west of Limavady. Eglinton had a population of 3,679 people in the 2011 Census, an increase of 16% on the 2001 Census population of 3,165. It lies within Derry and Strabane district. The City of Derry Airport, also known as Eglinton Aerodrome and formerly as Londonderry Eglinton Airport, lies a short distance from the village. Eglinton still has an elegant church, former market house, trees around a green and four oaks which started life in Windsor Great Park. Fairey Swordfish
The Fairey Swordfish is a biplane torpedo bomber, designed by the Fairey Aviation Company. Originating in the early 1930s, the Swordfish, nicknamed "Stringbag", was principally operated by the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. It was also used by the Royal Air Force (RAF), as well as several overseas operators, including the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and the Royal Netherlands Navy. 20th Carrier Air Group
HMAS ''Sydney'' (R17/A214/P214/L134) was a light aircraft carrier operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). She was built for the Royal Navy and was launched as HMS ''Terrible'' (93) in 1944, but was not completed before the end of World War II. The carrier was sold to Australia in 1947, completed, and commissioned into the RAN as ''Sydney'' in 1948. ''Sydney'' was the first of three conventional aircraft carriers to serve in the RAN, and operated as the navy's flagship during the early part of her career.
