RFL Match Officials
The RFL Match Officials are a select group of professional Rugby League match officials who officiate the top divisions of Rugby League in Britain. Officials are required to take part in a Fitness Test to maintain and or gain their status. Match Official Department Staff Graded Match Officials To become an Elite match official, Grade 1 officials must have an interview with the Head of Match Officials. Elite Referees (RFL Full Time Match Officials) Since the 2007 season, the Rugby Football League have employed a panel of full-time officials. That panel currently has eight members. Chris Kendall
Chris Kendall (born 3 June 1992) is an English rugby league referee. He has been a match official at the Rugby League World Cup and took the lead at multiple Super League Grand Finals. Career Kendall played rugby league for the Newsome Panthers as a child before moving to Huddersfield Giants at academy level. He played as a halfback, being first choice for this position ahead of Niall Evalds, which encouraged the latter to try out for Salford instead. Kendall also officiated matches at community level. After his junior playing career, he joined the Rugby Football League referee cadet programme, saying he thought the programme was a great opportunity for people to stay in the sport after playing. He began refereeing matches, initially as a touch judge, in 2012, before becoming a grade 1 referee in 2013. He was appointed a full-time match official in July 2015. Ben Thaler
Ben Thaler (born 30 August 1981) is a professional rugby league referee and one of the Rugby Football League's Full Time Match Officials. He officiates in the Super League. Background Thaler was born in Normanton, West Yorkshire, England. Career Ben's first pro game was against Leigh v York City Knights on 1 July 2001. His first Super League game was against the London Broncos v Leigh on 29 May 2005. He was a part of a New Zealand referee exchange in 2005. He was the referee for both the 2015 Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford, and the 2015 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. James Child
James Child (born 4 July 1983) is a former English rugby league referee. He was one of the Rugby Football League's Full Time Match Officials. On 19 December 2022, Child announced that he would be stepping down as referee, ahead of the 2023 season. Referee career James started refereeing at the age of 11 years as a member of the Dewsbury & Batley Rugby League Referees' Society. Since then he has enjoyed many notable successes, particularly as a touch judge having officiated at the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Challenge Cup Finals, the 2007 and 2008 Super League Grand Finals and most notably the 2008 Rugby League World Cup Final. Thierry Alibert
Thierry Alibert is a professional rugby league referee. Alibert is a full-time professional referee, under jurisdiction from the Rugby Football League, and currently takes charge of Super League games, as well as selected Challenge Cup and international games as one of the Rugby Football League's Full Time Match Officials. Alibert got his opportunity to step up to full-time professionalism with the return of the referee Ashley Klein to his native Australia. Steve Ganson
Steve Ganson (born 4 January 1970 in St. Helens, Lancashire, England) is a former rugby league referee, and current Head of Match Officials and Technical Director with the English Rugby Football League. He is the second professional referee from the town as Premier League referee Chris Foy also hails from St Helens. On 12 April 2013, Ganson retired his role as referee to take up the role of Match Officials Coach and Technical Director. Richard Silverwood
Richard Silverwood (born 1976, in Dewsbury, England) is a retired international rugby league referee. He officiated in the Super League competition as one of the Rugby Football League's Full Time Match Officials until his retirement whilst suspended in July 2016. First games Silverwood's first professional game was York - Batley Bulldogs on 28 March 1999. His first Super League game was Halifax - Salford City Reds on 6 May 2001. Ashley Klein
Ashley Klein is an Australian rugby league referee. Klein refereed in England, beginning in the Rugby League Conference. His first professional game was Workington Town v Featherstone Rovers on 8 September 2002. His first Super League game was Huddersfield Giants v Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on 15 June 2003. In 2006 Klein was named by the Rugby League International Federation as referee of the year. Klein was in charge of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup Final in Australia. Super League
The Super League (officially known as the Betfred Super League due to sponsorship from Betfred and legally known as Super League Europe), is the top-level of the British rugby league system. At present the league consists of twelve teams, of which eleven are from Northern England, reflecting the sport's geographic heartland within the UK, and one from southern France. The Super League began in 1996, replacing the existing Rugby Football League Championship First Division, First Division and, significantly, switching from a traditional winter season to a summer season. Rugby Football League
The Rugby Football League is the governing body for professional rugby league in England, and until 1995 for the whole British Isles. The name Rugby Football League previously also referred to the main league competition run by the organisation. This has since been supplanted by Super League, the Championship and League 1.
