Royal Air Force Inverness or RAF Inverness was a Royal Air Force Royal Air Force station, station located by the Moray Firth in Highland (council area), Highland, Scotland. It was also known as RAF Longman and previously Longman Airfield. History Longman Airfield was built in 1933 by the local council as a civilian airport for Highland Airways Limited, Highland Airways to link Orkney and Wick, Caithness, Wick to Inverness and its major rail links. The airfield was converted to a Royal Air Force base at the Outbreak of World War II, but didn't officially become an RAF base until 1941. Inverness
Inverness (; from the gd, Inbhir Nis , meaning "Mouth of the River Ness"; sco, Innerness) is a city in the Scottish Highlands. The Avro Anson is a British twin-engined, multi-role aircraft built by the aircraft manufacturer Avro. Large numbers of the type served in a variety of roles for the Royal Air Force (RAF), Fleet Air Arm (FAA), Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and numerous other air forces before, during, and after the Second World War. Dalcross, in the original Gaelic, Dealgan Cros, later shortened to Dealgros, is a location in the Highland (council area), Highland region of Scotland. It is on the Moray Firth about 10 km (6 miles) east-north-east of Inverness and contains Inverness Airport, Dalcross industrial estate, Dalcross Castle and Dalcross Forest. 782 Naval Air Squadron (782 NAS) was a Naval Air Squadron of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. It initially formed in November 1939 as an Armament Training Squadron but disbanded in December to provide personnel for 774 Naval Air Squadron. The de Havilland DH.89 Dragon Rapide is a 1930s short-haul biplane airliner developed and produced by British aircraft company de Havilland. Capable of accommodating 6–8 passengers, it proved an economical and durable craft, despite its relatively primitive plywood construction.
