R82 (Gauteng)
The R82 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Johannesburg with Kroonstad via Vereeniging and Sasolburg. It starts just south of the M1 Johannesburg Municipal Highway's interchange with the N12 Southern Bypass (Uncle Charlie's Interchange), going south, meeting the R59, R54, R42 & R28 routes at Vereeniging before crossing the Vaal River into the Free State & proceeding to Kroonstad. It is an alternative, but longer route to the N1 National Route between Johannesburg & Kroonstad. Route The R82 is an alternative route to the N1 National Highway from Johannesburg to Kroonstad, with the N1 highway being a shorter and more direct route by about 20 kilometres. Lenasia, often called Lenz, is a suburb south of Soweto in the Gauteng province, South Africa, originally created to house Indians. It is part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Nigel, Gauteng
Nigel is a small gold mining town in Gauteng Province, South Africa, south-east of Johannesburg. The town is at the south-eastern edge of the area known as the East Rand. Background A farmer, shopkeeper and prospector, Petrus Johannes Marais, having read Sir Walter Scott's ''The Fortunes of Nigel'' at the time (see Nigel), formed the Nigel Gold Mining Company after the discovery of gold on the farm Varkensfontein in 1886. The town, which grew around the mine, still bears names derived from Scott's book and its characters with the suburb of ''Glenvarloch'' and its streets derived from that source. The R550 is a Regional Route in Gauteng, South Africa that connects Johannesburg South with Devon via Katlehong and Nigel. Route Its western terminus is a junction with the R82 and R554 roads in Johannesburg South, just south of Kibler Park and north of Walkerville (east of Lenasia). From there, the R550 goes south-east for 15 kilometres, following the Klip River, to reach a T-junction near a place named Kliprivier. At this junction, the R550 turns eastwards and meets the R59 Highway at an interchange just after. The R554 is a Regional Route in Gauteng, South Africa. The road connects the southern suburbs of Soweto with Springs on the East Rand via Lenasia, Alberton and Brakpan. Route Its western terminus is an interchange with the M68 and the N12 Moroka Bypass, just south of Soweto, Gauteng (south of Protea Glen), as Abu Baker Asvat Drive. The route initially runs south, to Lenasia and then turns east in the town centre. It intersects with the R553 and passes over the N1 east of Lenasia. At a four-way intersection north of Walkerville, the eastbound road becomes the R550. The R554 is then cosigned with the intersecting R82 for 800 metres northwards, crossing the Klip River, before the R554 becomes its own road eastwards just west of Kibler Park. The M68 is a short metropolitan route in Johannesburg, South Africa. It connects the south-western part of Soweto (Protea South) with Mulbarton via Diepkloof, Southgate and Glenvista. Route The M68 begins at an interchange with the N12 Moroka Bypass and the R554 Road just north of Lenasia. It begins by going northwards as Abu Baker Asvat Drive up to the next junction in Protea South (south of Protea Glen), where it becomes Chris Hani Road eastwards. N12 (South Africa)
The N12 is a national route in South Africa which runs from George through Beaufort West, Kimberley, Klerksdorp and Johannesburg to eMalahleni. It is the only other National Route after the N1 Route that connects the Western Cape Province with the Gauteng Province. Prior to 1971, the N12 from Johannesburg to Three Sisters was known as the N13. Route Summary The road starts in George in the Western Cape and ends in eMalahleni in Mpumalanga. The road runs roughly from south to north, however, once it passes Kimberley in the Northern Cape, it gradually turns eastward. Only the section between Soweto and eMalahleni is a limited access dual motorway. The section between Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom is a dual carriage highway.
