The R72 is a provincial route in Eastern Cape, South Africa that connects the N2 east of Port Elizabeth with East London via Port Alfred. It provides an alternative to the N2 for travel between Port Elizabeth and East London. Route The R72 begins in the city of East London in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, at an off-ramp junction with the N2 Highway. North of this junction, it is the N6 National Route to Bloemfontein. The R72 begins by going southwards for 6 kilometres from the N2 interchange as the North East Expressway, immediately crossing the Nahoon River and becoming a partial highway with off-ramp junctions, up to the Fleet Street junction in the suburb of Quigney, where it becomes Fleet Street westwards. It goes westwards for 9 kilometres, through East London's Central Business District, crossing the Buffalo River, to become Settlers Way and reach the East London Airport entrance. Buffalo River, Eastern Cape
The Buffalo River is situated in the city of East London on the East Coast of South Africa. It is to the west of the Nahoon River. It is the only navigable river in South Africa. The town of East London was thus established around it. Course The Buffalo River has its source in the seeps and sponges of the Amatola Mountains at an altitude of 1200 m. The river is 126 kilometres long and drains a catchment of 1287 square kilometres. From its source, the river descends through indigenous forest in a deeply incised channel, flanked by rock cliffs up to 120 metres high. The quality of these headwaters is good. After only seven kilometres, the river faces its first obstruction, the small, century-old Maden Dam. The N10 is a national route (South Africa), national route in South Africa connecting Gqeberha on the Eastern Cape coast with the Namibian border at Nakop, via Cradock, Eastern Cape, Cradock, De Aar and Upington. Kariega River
The Kariega River ( af, Kariegarivier) is situated in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. This river, which starts 24 km west of Grahamstown, is characterized by its intermittent flow and empties into the ocean through an estuary. The Kariega River is also the source of the name for the nearby Kariega Park. Origin of the name The cave paintings found near the river showcase a variety of creatures, including the Steenbok, and objects such as the Swartberg sailing ship. These paintings also highlight the fact that animals were sometimes depicted in caves that were not their natural habitats, like the Swartberg ship, which was located 100 km from the sea. The Khoikhoi were the first settlers in much of the Cape region. Although their descendants still live in the area, their language is only spoken in some parts of the Northern Cape. Kowie River
The Kowie River (Coyi in Xhosa) is a river in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It has its source in the hills of the "Grahamstown Heights" from where it flows in a south-easterly direction draining the major part of the Bathurst region, reaching the Indian Ocean through an estuary at Port Alfred. Its major tributaries are the Bloukrans River, the Bak River and the Lushington River (or Torrens). The Little Kowie River is a smaller tributary which enters the estuarine portion of the river 14 km from the mouth. There are also a number of smaller unnamed streams entering the river along its course. The Kowie river is part of the Fish to Tsitsikama Water Management Area. The R67 is a provincial route in Eastern Cape, South Africa that connects Port Alfred with Komani (previously Queenstown) via Grahamstown. Route The R67 begins in Port Alfred, at a junction with the R72 Road. It begins by going north-north-west for 54 kilometres as the Blaauwkrantz Pass to reach an interchange with the N2 National Route south of the Grahamstown town centre (renamed Makhanda in 2018). The R67 joins the N2 and they are one road eastwards for 9 kilometres before the R67 becomes its own road northwards. From the N2 split east of Makhanda, the R67 goes northwards for 70 kilometres as the Ecca Pass, crossing the Great Fish River and following the Kat River, to reach a junction with the R63 Road in the town of Fort Beaufort. The Great Fish River (called ''great'' to distinguish it from the Namibian Fish River) ( af, Groot-Visrivier) is a river running through the South African province of the Eastern Cape. The coastal area between Port Elizabeth and the Fish River mouth is known as the '' Sunshine Coast''. The Great Fish River was originally named ''Rio do Infante'', after João Infante, the captain of one of the caravels of Bartolomeu Dias. Infante visited the river in the late 1480s.
