R64 Road (South Africa)
The R64 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Kimberley with Bloemfontein via Boshof and Dealesville. It is slightly longer than the newer N8 route via Petrusburg, by about 10 kilometres. Route The R64 begins at an interchange with the N1 and the N8 national routes in Bloemfontein (Capital of the Free State), just west of the city centre. It begins by going north-west for 31 kilometres to cross the Modder River adjacent to the Krugersdrift Dam. It continues north-west for another 30 kilometres, exiting the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, to meet the western terminus of the R703 Road and enter the town of Dealesville. In Dealesville Central, it turns west at the Brand Street junction and goes for 18 kilometres to meet the south-western terminus of the R59 Road. The N12 is a national route in South Africa which runs from George through Beaufort West, Kimberley, Klerksdorp and Johannesburg to eMalahleni. It is the only other National Route after the N1 Route that connects the Western Cape Province with the Gauteng Province. Prior to 1971, the N12 from Johannesburg to Three Sisters was known as the N13. Route Summary The road starts in George in the Western Cape and ends in eMalahleni in Mpumalanga. The road runs roughly from south to north, however, once it passes Kimberley in the Northern Cape, it gradually turns eastward. Only the section between Soweto and eMalahleni is a limited access dual motorway. The section between Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom is a dual carriage highway. Northern Cape
The Northern Cape is the largest and most sparsely populated province of South Africa. It was created in 1994 when the Cape Province was split up. Its capital is Kimberley. The R59 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Hertzogville with Alberton (south-east of Johannesburg) via Bothaville, Parys and Vereeniging. The R59 is a freeway from the R57 Junction in Sasolburg until the Alberton N12 Reading Interchange, signposted as the Sybrand van Niekerk Freeway. Route Free State The R59 begins at a t-junction with the R64 about 18 kilometres west of Dealesville. It heads north for 61 kilometres to the town of Hertzogville, where it meets the R708 at a t-junction next to the Palmietpan and they become co-signed northwards. North of the town, the R59 becomes its own road north-east, heading for 50 kilometres to Hoopstad where on the southerly outskirts, before the Vet River, it meets the northern terminus of the R700 at a t-junction and turns northwards. R703 (South Africa)
The R703 is a Regional Route in South Africa. Route Its western terminus is the R64 just east of Dealesville. From there, it heads east to the town of Soutpan. Just outside Soutpan, it crosses the R700 at a staggered intersection. Continuing east, it reaches Brandfort, where it crosses the R30. From Brandfort, the route initially heads east, reaching a t-junction. The R703 continues along the intersecting road, heading south-east, while the other road is unsigned and heads to Winburg. The south-eastern R703 crosses the N1 to reach Verkeerdevlei. Leaving the town, it maintains its direction coming to Excelsior. Here it forms a staggered intersection with the R709 and leaves the town heading east. Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality is a metropolitan municipality which governs Bloemfontein and surrounding towns in the Free State province of South Africa. Mangaung is a Sesotho name meaning "place of cheetahs", as it was not uncommon for the Basotho to name warrior regiments after ferocious animals. Krugersdrift Dam
The Krugersdrift Dam in the Modder River is 35 km northwest of Bloemfontein, Free State Province of South Africa with a capacity of 73.2 million cubic metres. It was built in 1970 with a wall length of 3114 m, height of 26 m and a surface area of 1 853 ha. The huge dam is very shallow and can lose its water in a short period of time due to usage and evaporation. The dam is situated in the Soetdoring Nature Reserve and holds yellowfish, Orange River mudfish, barbel and carp. It is a popular birding venue with large numbers of South African shelduck, Spur-winged geese and Egyptian geese. Access to the reserve is from the Bloemfontein-Bultfontein road (R700) or from the Bloemfontein-Kimberley road (R64); the reserve is about 40 kilometres from Bloemfontein's city centre. The Modder River is a river in South Africa. It is a tributary of the Riet River that forms part of the border between the Northern Cape and the Free State provinces. The river's banks were the scenes of heavy fighting in the beginning of the Second Boer War at the Battle of Modder River.
