R381 Road (South Africa)
The R381 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects the N1 at Beaufort West in the south with Loxton in the north. From Beaufort West, in the Western Cape, the route passes through the Rosesberg Pass to reach the Karoo National Park. It then enters the Molteno Pass through the Nuweveld Mountains. Just before reaching Loxton, the route crosses into the Northern Cape The Northern Cape is the largest and most sparsely populated province of South Africa. N1 (South Africa)
The N1 is a national route in South Africa that runs from Cape Town through Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Polokwane to Beit Bridge on the border with Zimbabwe. It forms the first section of the famed Cape to Cairo Road. Prior to 1970, the N1 designation was applied to the route from Beit Bridge to Colesberg and then along the current N9 to George. Beaufort West
Beaufort West (Afrikaans: ''Beaufort-Wes''; Xhosa: ''eBhofolo'') is a town in the Western Cape province in South Africa. It is the largest town in the arid Great Karoo region, and is known as the "Capital of the Karoo". It forms part of the Beaufort West Local Municipality, with 34,085 inhabitants in 2011. It is the centre of an agricultural district based mainly on sheep farming, and is a significant town and logistical support hub on the N1 national road. Next door to Beaufort West is the Karoo National Park. Important Permian era fossils have been found in the area to the west of the town. Loxton, Northern Cape
Loxton is a town in the Karoo region of South Africa's Northern Cape province. Within the Ubuntu Local Municipality of the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality It is in one of the major wool-producing and one of the largest garlic-producing areas in South Africa. With a population of 1,053 in 2011, the area is quiet and sparsely populated. Afrikaans is the most widely spoken language in the town. History Loxton was originally a farm called Phizantefontein, which was owned by A.E. Loxton, whom the town is named after. The farm was bought from him in 1899 by the Dutch Reformed Church for £7,500 so as to establish a parish for local farmers. The town is believed to have been named after A.E Loxton due to a £50 donation he made to fund the salary of the town's first Dutch Reformed Church minister. Molteno Pass
Molteno Pass is a mountain pass in the Western Cape province of South Africa. History It is considered to be South Africa's first mountain pass. It was built to cross the great Nuweveld Mountain Range, thus connecting the central Karoo and its oldest town Beaufort West, to the vast expanse of the Northern Cape. It was completed in May 1881, and named after a local entrepreneur and farmer John Molteno who was instrumental in the area's upliftment and development in the 1800s.
