Cootehill
Cootehill (; ) is a market town and townland in County Cavan, Ireland. Cootehill was formerly part of the neighbouring townland of Munnilly. Both townlands lie within the barony of Tullygarvey. The English language name of the town is a portmanteau of "Coote" and "Hill", the family names of a local 18th century landowning family. Name The town's Irish name, ''Muinchille'', derives from the Irish language term meaning a ridge or "sleeve". The town's name in English, Cootehill, is a portmanteau attributed to the intermarriage of the landowning Coote and Hill families in the early 1700s. This involved the marriage of Thomas Coote (c. 1620–25 Nov 1671) and Frances Hill from Hillsborough, County Down, who were involved in the linen trade. Cavan ( ; ) is the county town of County Cavan in Ireland. The town lies in Ulster, near the border with County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. The town is bypassed by the main N3 road that links Dublin (to the south) with Enniskillen, Ballyshannon and Donegal Town (to the north). The N3 road is a national primary road in the Republic of Ireland, running between Dublin, Cavan and Republic of Ireland-United Kingdom border, the border with County Fermanagh. The A509 road (Northern Ireland), A509 and A46 road (Northern Ireland), A46 roads in Northern Ireland form part of an overall route connecting to Enniskillen, and northwest to the border again where the N3 reappears to serve Ballyshannon in County Donegal. Rush hour congestion between Navan and Dublin city was very heavy (up to 22,000 vehicles per day on single carriageway portions of the N3 in 2002), and problems occurred at most built-up areas between these points. Route Northeast to southwest, the route starts at a junction with the R188 west of Cootehill. It continues southwards through Stradone, to join the N3 and in 500 m leaves the N3 at Lavey.
