Río Grande De Añasco
The Río Grande de Añasco is a river in western Puerto Rico. Its source is in the Cordillera Central mountain range west of Adjuntas, and it flows about westward to its mouth on the Mona Passage north of Mayagüez. The river flows through the municipalities of Mayagüez, Añasco, San Sebastián and Las Marías. The taínos called it Río Guaorabo. History In the 1898 ''Military Notes on Puerto Rico'' by the U.S. it is written that the "Añasco River is formed by the Lares Mountain ridge. It rises in the eastern extremity of the mountains called Tetas de Cerro Gordo, flowing first northwest, and then west, through the town of its name and thence to the sea." It is spanned by the Puente de Añasco, a bridge listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Las Marías, Puerto Rico
Las Marías (, ) is a town and municipality of Puerto Rico located north of Maricao; southeast of Añasco; south of San Sebastián; east of Mayagüez; and west of Lares. Las Marías is spread over 13 barrios and Las Marías Pueblo (the downtown area and the administrative center of the city). History Las Marías was founded on July 1, 1871. Don Benito Recio y Moreno was the acting mayor during the founding of Las Marías. Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became a territory of the United States. Puente De Añasco
The Puente de Añasco, also called Puente Salcedo, is a bridge spanning between Añasco, Puerto Rico and Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. It is located at Kilometer 146.1 of Puerto Rico Highway 2, Highway 2. It spans the boundary between the Añasco Arriba, Añasco, Puerto Rico, Añasco Arriba barrio in the municipality of Añasco and the Sabanetas, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, Sabanetas barrio in the municipality of Mayagüez. The bridge bears a striking similarity to the Puente de Trujillo Alto, another Pennsylvania through truss bridge built during 1939–1941 in the Trujillo Alto municipality of Puerto Rico. Lares (, ) is a mountain town and municipality of Puerto Rico's central-western area. Lares is located north of Maricao and Yauco; south of Camuy, east of San Sebastián and Las Marias; and west of Hatillo, Utuado and Adjuntas. The Taíno were a historic Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, indigenous people of the Caribbean whose culture has been continued today by Taíno descendant communities and Taíno revivalist communities. Mona Passage
The Mona Passage ( es, Canal de la Mona) is a strait that separates the islands of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. The Mona Passage connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea and is an important shipping route between the Atlantic and the Panama Canal. The Mona Passage is 80 miles (130 kilometer). It is fraught with variable tidal currents created by large islands on either side of it, and by sand banks that extend out from both coasts.
