Ruth Dalsgaard
Ruth Dalsgaard née Frederiksen was a former Danish badminton player. She won a national championship title every year from 1931 to 1935, teaming up with her sister Gerda. Further wins came in 1937 and 1942, the latter with her new partner Jytte Thayssen. In addition to this she won seven national titles in mixed doubles from 1933 to 1942. Her greatest achievement was winning the 1939 All England Badminton Championships doubles title with Tonny Ahm. Badminton
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault has been called by the umpire, service judge, or (in their absence) the opposing side. The shuttlecock is a feathered or (in informal matches) plastic projectile which flies differently from the balls used in many other sports. Tonny Ahm
Tonny Kristine Ahm (f. Olsen) (21 September 1914 – 7 April 1993) was a female badminton player from Denmark. She won 26 Danish National Championships between 1935 and 1957. She won eleven events at the prestigious All-England Championships, all but one of them after reaching the age of thirty. In her early forties she played singles for Denmark in the first Uber Cup The Uber Cup, sometimes called the World Women's Team Championships, is a major international badminton competition contested by women's national badminton teams. All England Badminton Championships
The All England Open Badminton Championships is the world's oldest badminton tournament, held annually in England. With the introduction of the BWF's latest grading system, it was given Super Series status in 2007, upgraded to Super Series Premier status in 2011. The world's first open tournament was held in the English town of Guildford in 1898, the success of which paved the way for the All England's inaugural edition, which was held at London's Horticultural Halls in 1899. Although the inaugural edition consisted of just the doubles format, the singles were introduced from the second edition onward. It was eventually considered – especially after the first Thomas Cup series in 1949 – the unofficial world championship of the sport until 1977, when the International Badminton Federation launched its official championships.
