''Russula agaricina'' is a fungus in the family, Russulaceae. It was first described in 1876 as ''Macowania agaricina'' by Károly Kalchbrenner, and in 2007, based on phylogenetic evidence was transferred to the genus, '' Russula'', by Teresa Lebel and Jennifer Tonkin (but invalidly published). James Trappe
James Martin Trappe (born 1931) is a mycologist and expert in the field of North American truffle species. He has authored or co-authored 450 scientific papers and written three books on the subject. MycoBank lists him as either author or co-author of 401 individual species, and over the course of his career he has helped guide research on mycorrhizal fungi, and reshaped truffle taxonomy (biology), taxonomy: establishing a new order (biology), order, two new family (biology), families, and 40 individual genera. Research Hypogeous Fungi or ‘Truffles’ Trappe first encountered truffles in the wild in the late 1950s during his Ph.D. thesis research. Since then Trappe has become widely regarded as one of the foremost experts on truffles in the world. Russulaceae
The Russulaceae are a diverse family of fungi in the order Russulales, with roughly 1,900 known species and a worldwide distribution. They comprise the brittlegills and the milk-caps, well-known mushroom-forming fungi that include some edible species. These gilled mushrooms are characterised by the brittle flesh of their fruitbodies. In addition to these typical agaricoid forms, the family contains species with fruitbodies that are laterally striped ( pleurotoid), closed (secotioid or gasteroid), or crust-like (corticioid). Molecular phylogenetics has demonstrated close affinities between species with very different fruitbody types and has discovered new, distinct lineages. Károly Kalchbrenner
Károly Kalchbrenner (born 5 May 1807 in Pöttelsdorf, died 5 June 1886 in Spišské Vlachy) was a Hungarian mycologist. He trained in theology early in life and became a priest in Spišské Vlachy, north-eastern Slovakia. His contributions include the publication of 60 papers and description of more than 400 fungi from Europe, Asia, Australia and South America. He wrote and illustrated the ''Icones Selectae Hymenomycetum Hungariae''. Among those he later collaborated with are Ferdinand von Mueller in Victoria, Australia, John Medley Wood in South Africa, Mordecai Cubitt Cooke in England and Felix von Thümen in Austria. He was elected a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a corresponding member of the Linnean Society of New South Wales. Russula
''Russula'' is a very large genus composed of around 750 worldwide species of ectomycorrhizal mushrooms. They are typically common, fairly large, and brightly colored – making them one of the most recognizable genera among mycologists and mushroom collectors. Their distinguishing characteristics include usually brightly coloured caps, a white to dark yellow spore print, brittle, attached gill (mushroom), gills, an absence of latex, and absence of partial veil or universal veil, volva tissue on the stem. Microscopically, the genus is characterised by the amyloid ornamented spores and flesh (trama) composed of spherocysts. Members of the related genus ''Lactarius (fungus), Lactarius'' have similar characteristics but emit a milky latex when their gills are broken. Teresa Lebel
Dr Teresa Lebel is a taxonomist and ecologist who works on fungi, with a particular interest in subterranean truffle-like fungi and their mushroom, bolete, bracket or cup relatives. Career Lebel studied at the University of Western Australia (undergraduate and Honours 1989), then Oregon State University (PhD) before taking up a position at the National Herbarium of Victoria as a mycologist (1999-2019), and Editor of Muelleria. During this time, Lebel undertook a two-year sabbatical on the Ross Beever Memorial Fellowship at Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research (2012-2014). Lebel is currently (2020-) Senior Botanist and Curator Cryptogams at the State Herbarium of South Australia. The National Herbarium of Victoria holds over 1200 specimens collected by Lebel, the majority truffle-like fungi.
