Russia Women's National Rugby Sevens Team
The Russian women's national rugby sevens team (russian: Женская сборная России по регби-7) is a women's rugby team in Europe. Since 2013, it is dominating the European Championships, winning the trophy seven times. Internationally, Russia's best performance was in 2013, finishing in the quarterfinals. The team was runner-up at the 2015 Canada Women's Sevens, after defeating Australia in quarter-finals and France in semifinals. Russia failed to qualify for the inaugural rugby sevens event in 2016 Summer Olympics; however, they qualified for the following Olympic Games in Tokyo. After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, World Rugby and Rugby Europe suspended Russia from international and European continental rugby union competition. In addition, the Rugby Union of Russia was suspended from World Rugby and Rugby Europe. Alena Dimitrievna Tiron (russian: link=no, Алёна Димитриевна Тирон), née Alena Bogacheva (russian: link=no, Алёна Богачёва); born 8 December 1993) is a Russian female rugby union and rugby sevens player which represents Russia in World Rugby Women's Sevens Series and Rugby Europe Women's Sevens. Biography Rugby player career Alena came to rugby from track and field while having silver and bronze medals of 2012 Russia Championship in relay (400+300+200+100 and 800+400+200+100 respectively). She declined the invitation to rugby union from Yenisey-STM manager in 2011, but two years later, in March 2013 after graduating from sports school she moved to Krasnoyarsk and began training. 2015 Canada Women's Sevens
The 2015 Canada Women's Sevens was the fourth tournament within the 2014–15 World Rugby Women's Sevens Series. It was held over the weekend of 18 – 19 April 2015 at Westhills Stadium in the Victoria suburb of Langford, British Columbia. Format The teams were drawn into three pools of four teams each. Each team played the others teams in their pool once. The top two teams from each pool advanced to the Cup/Plate brackets along with the top two third place teams. Rugby World Cup Sevens (RWCS) is the quadrennial world championship of rugby sevens, a variant of rugby union. Organised by World Rugby, it currently consists of men's and women's tournaments, and is the highest level of competition in the sport outside of the Summer Olympics. The first tournament was held in 1993 in Scotland, and was won by England. The winners of the men's tournament are awarded the Melrose Cup, named after the Scottish town of Melrose where the first rugby sevens game was played. A women's tournament was introduced at the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai, and was first won by Australia. Rugby sevens at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo took place from 26 July to 31 July 2021 at the Tokyo Stadium. 24 teams (12 each for men and women) competed in the tournament. The dates were modified due to the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 games as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Competition The men's and women's rugby sevens competitions took place at Tokyo Stadium, a 2019 Rugby World Cup host venue. The men's sessions took place July 26–28 with the women's sessions happening July 29–31, 2021. Changes In a reverse to the 2016 schedule, the men's competition was played first over three days from July 27–29 with the women's competition taking place from July 30 through August 1 and culminating with the gold medal session. Rugby sevens at the Summer Olympics was played for the first time at the 2016 Summer Olympics with both men's and women's contests. Rugby sevens was added to the Olympics following the decision of the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen in October 2009.
