Russell Smith (Australian Politician)
Russell Harold Lester Smith (born 22 November 1946) is an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 2003, representing the electorate of Bega. Smith was a farmer and businessman before entering state politics. He had also served as a councillor and deputy president of both the Bombala Council and the Monaro County Council. Smith was preselected as the Liberal candidate for the newly re-established safe Liberal seat of electoral district of Bega at the 1988 election and was easily elected. The Liberal Party of Australia (New South Wales Division), commonly known as the New South Wales Liberals, is the state division of the Liberal Party of Australia in New South Wales. The party currently governs in New South Wales in coalition with the National Party of Australia (NSW). The party is part of the federal Liberal Party which is in opposition nationally. Following the Liberal Party's formation in October 1944, the NSW division of the Liberal Party was formed in January 1945. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Bega is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is represented by Michael Holland of the Labor Party. Bega is a regional electorate in the southeastern corner of the state. It encompasses the entirety of Bega Valley Shire and Eurobodalla Shire. Its population centres include Bega, Tathra, Merimbula, Eden, Bemboka, Eurobodalla Shire, Moruya, Batemans Bay and Narooma. History In 1894, single-member electorates were introduced statewide and the two-member electorate of Eden was split into Bega and Eden-Bombala. Bombala Council
The Bombala Shire was a local government area in the Monaro region of south-eastern New South Wales, Australia. The Shire includes the town of Bombala, the villages of Delegate, Cathcart, Bibbenluke and the localities of Ando, Bungarby, Craigie, Mila, Rockton and Creewah. Bombala Shire was formed on 1 October 1977 by the amalgamation of the Municipality of Bombala and Bibbenluke Shire. Prior to its abolition, Bombala was the fifth smallest rural shire in New South Wales, by area. 1988 New South Wales General Election
Elections to the 49th Parliament of New South Wales were held on Saturday 19 March 1988. All seats in the Legislative Assembly and a third of the seats in the Legislative Council were up for election. The Labor government of Premier Barrie Unsworth was defeated by the Liberal-National Coalition, led by Opposition Leader Nick Greiner. The election took place following a redistribution of seats, which resulted in the Assembly growing from 99 to 109 seats. 2003 New South Wales General Election
Elections to the 53rd Parliament of New South Wales were held on Saturday 22 March 2003. All seats in the Legislative Assembly and half the seats in the Legislative Council were up for election. The Labor Party led by Bob Carr won a third four-year term against the Liberal-National Coalition led by John Brogden. Andrew James Constance (born 31 October 1973) is a former Australian politician and was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Bega for the Liberal Party between 2003 and December 2021.
