Russell (Province Of Canada Electoral District)
Russell was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of the Parliament of the Province of Canada, in Canada West (now Ontario). It was created in 1841, upon the establishment of the Province of Canada by the union of Upper Canada and Lower Canada. Russell was represented by one member in the Legislative Assembly. It was abolished in 1867, upon the creation of Canada and the province of Ontario. Boundaries Russell electoral district was based on Russell County (now part of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell). It was located east of Bytown (now Ottawa, Ontario), on the Ottawa River, which formed the border with Canada East (now the province of Quebec). The Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada was the lower house of the legislature for the Province of Canada, which consisted of the former provinces of Lower Canada, then known as Canada East and later the province of Quebec, and Upper Canada, then known as Canada West and later the province of Ontario. It was created by The Union Act of 1840. Canada East and Canada West each elected 42 members to the assembly. The upper house of the legislature was called the Legislative Council. The first session of parliament began in Kingston in Canada West in 1841. The second parliament and the first sessions of the third parliament were held in Montreal. Prescott County, Ontario
Prescott County is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. It was created in 1800 from a portion of Glengarry County. It was named in honor of Major General Robert Prescott, Governor of Canada at that time. First settlers were Americans, but not all were Loyalists. It later merged with Russell County to form Prescott and Russell United Counties. William Stewart (Upper Canada And Canada West)
William Stewart (July 24, 1803 – March 21, 1856) was a businessman and political figure in Upper Canada and Canada West. An immigrant from Scotland, he settled in Bytown (now Ottawa) where he was active in business and public life. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada, serving from 1843 to 1847. He died in Toronto in 1856, while representing the interests of the city of Ottawa. Early life and family Stewart was born in Carbost, Loch Harport on the Isle of Skye, Scotland in 1803 to Ranald Stewart and Isabella McLeod. After his father's death in 1816, Stewart and his family, consisting of his recently widowed mother, grandmother, uncle, and nine siblings, emigrated to Upper Canada. The Legislative Council of the Province of Canada was the upper house for the Province of Canada, which consisted of the former provinces of Lower Canada, then known as Canada East and later the province of Quebec, and Upper Canada, then known as Canada West and later the province of Ontario. William Henry Draper (judge)
William Henry Draper (March 11, 1801 – November 3, 1877) was a lawyer, judge, and politician in Upper Canada later Canada West. Personal life He was born near London, England in 1801, the son of Rev. Henry Draper and Mary Louisa. He joined the East India Company at age 15, making at least two voyages to India. In 1820, he settled in Port Hope in Upper Canada. Draper married Augusta "Mary" White in York, Ontario, in 1826, with whom he had several children, including William George Draper and Francis Collier Draper, both well known lawyers; the latter also served as chief of police in Toronto. He died in Yorkville, Toronto in 1877. Legal career Starting in 1822 he studied law under Thomas Ward in Port Hope. The First Parliament of the Province of Canada was summoned in 1841, following the union of Upper Canada and Lower Canada as the Province of Canada on February 10, 1841. The Parliament continued until dissolution in late 1844. Cambridge Township was a township in Ontario, Canada. Along with Clarence Township, Russell Township and Cumberland Township, Cambridge Township was one of the four townships of Russell County. It was created in 1800. It existed for 198 years before becoming part of The Nation Municipality in 1998, during the Eastern Ontario municipal fusions. Major communities in what was Cambridge Township are Limoges and St. Albert. Other communities include Benoit, Gagnon, Longtinville, Martels Corners and Mayerville. The Township of Russell is a municipal township, located south-east of Canada's capital of Ottawa in eastern Ontario, in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, on the Castor River. The township had a population of 16,520 in the 2016 Canadian Census. Communities The primary communities are Embrun and Russell. The township administrative offices are located in Embrun. Smaller communities listed in the official Ontario place names database are Felton, Forget, Marionville, North Russell and Pana. Both the municipal government and Canada Post consider Brisson and Forget to be part of Embrun, and Felton, North Russell, and Pana as part of Russell. Canada Post also considers Marionville to be part of Russell, although the municipality considers Marionville to be separate. Osgoode Township
Osgoode Township is a former township that is now a part of the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The township along the Rideau River was established in 1798 and incorporated in 1850. It was an independent township in Carleton County until its amalgamation with the city in 2001. It remains a largely rural area with only some 23,285 inhabitants as of the 2016 census. As of the Canada 2021 Census, this had increased to 24,199. On Ottawa city council it is represented by George Darouze.
