Old English
Old English (, ), or Anglo-Saxon, is the earliest recorded form of the English language, spoken in England and southern and eastern Scotland in the early Middle Ages. Charles Rumbold
Charles Edmund Rumbold (11 August 1788 – 31 May 1857) was a British Whig politician. He was the fifth son of Sir Thomas Rumbold, 1st Baronet, and his second wife Joanna Law, daughter of Edmund Law, Bishop of Carlisle. Rumbold was educated at Oriel College, Oxford, and went then to Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1812, he began his Grand Tour and returned a year later. Rumbold was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Great Yarmouth in 1818, a seat he held until 1835. In the general election of 1837 he returned to the House of Commons and sat for the constituency again until 1847. In a by-election in the following year, he stood successfully a third time for Great Yarmouth and represented it until his death in 1857. In 1834, he married Harriet, daughter of John Gardner, and had by her three sons. ''Are You Being Served?'' is a British sitcom created and written by executive producer David Croft (Croft also directed some episodes) and Jeremy Lloyd, with contributions from Michael Knowles and John Chapman, for the BBC. Set in London, the show follows the misadventures and mishaps of the staff of the retail ladies' and gentlemen's clothing departments in the flagship department store of a fictional chain called Grace Brothers. The series was broadcast on the BBC for ten series, totalling 69 episodes between 8 September 1972 and 1 April 1985 – and included five Christmas specials. There was also a 1977 film, a spin-off series ''Grace & Favour'' with the same main cast in 1991–1992, and a one-off episode with a new cast in 2016. Richard Rumbold
Richard Rumbold (1622–1685) was a Parliamentarian soldier and political radical, exiled for his role in the 1683 Rye House Plot and later executed for taking part in the 1685 Argyll's Rising. During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, he joined the New Model Army, and was one of the guards at the execution of Charles I of England in January 1649. He reached the rank of Captain before being dismissed from the army after the 1660 Restoration. Closely involved with radical politics, he was implicated in the 1683 Rye House Plot, an alleged plan to assassinate Charles II of England and his brother James. After it was discovered, he escaped to the Dutch Republic, then took part in the 1685 Argyll's Rising, an unsuccessful attempt to drive James from the throne. Captured after being badly wounded, he was executed at Edinburgh on 26 June 1685. Hugo Cecil Levinge Rumbold (7 February 1884 – 19 November 1932) was an English designer of theatrical scenery and costumes. Among those who commissioned designs from him were Sir Herbert Tree, Sir Thomas Beecham, Arthur Bourchier and Rupert D'Oyly Carte. Life and career Rumbold was born in Stockholm, the younger son of the diplomat Sir Horace Rumbold and his second wife, Louisa Anne (d. 1940), daughter of Thomas Russell Crampton. His elder half-brother was another diplomat, also called Horace Rumbold. Rumbold went to Eton in 1897. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 7th (Militia) Battalion of the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own) in 1901 and served in South Africa during the Second Boer War. He was promoted to lieutenant in June 1902, the same month the war ended, and soon returned to England. Saint Rumbold (or ''Rumold'', ''Romuold'', la, Rumoldus, nl, Rombout, french: Rombaut) was an Irish or Scottish Christian missionary, although his true nationality is not known for certain. He was martyred near Mechelen by two men, whom he had denounced for their evil ways. Saint Rumbold's feast day is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church, and Western Rite Orthodox Churches, on 24 June; and it is celebrated in Ireland on 3 July. He is the patron saint of Mechelen, where St. Rumbold's Cathedral possesses an elaborate golden shrine on its high altar, containing relics attributed to the saint. It is rumoured that his remains are buried inside the cathedral. Twenty-five paintings in the choir illustrate his life. Sir Anthony Rumbold, 10th Baronet (7 March 1911 – 4 December 1983) was a British diplomat, ambassador to Thailand and Austria. Early life Horace Anthony Claude Rumbold, son of Sir Horace Rumbold, 9th Baronet, was educated at Eton College and Magdalen College, Oxford, and was for a short time a Fellow of Queen's College, Oxford, before joining the Diplomatic Service in 1935. Career Rumbold began his career in the Foreign Office in London and was posted to Washington, D.C., in 1937. He returned to the Foreign Office in 1942 before being posted to Italy in 1944 to the staff of the Minister Resident at Allied Headquarters in the Mediterranean, Harold Macmillan. Sir Horace George Montagu Rumbold, 9th Baronet, (5 February 1869 – 24 May 1941) was a British diplomat. A well-travelled man who learned Arabic, Japanese language, Japanese and German language, German, he is largely remembered for his role as list of diplomats of the United Kingdom to Germany, British Ambassador to Berlin from 1928 to 1933 in which he warned of the ambitions of Hitler and Nazi Germany.
