''Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town'' is the fourth album by American rock band The First Edition. This was the first album to credit the group as Kenny Rogers & The First Edition. The title song reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States (and was a success mirrored world-wide). "Reuben James" became a top-30 hit in 1969 for The First Edition before also being recorded by Conway Twitty for his 1970 ''Hello Darlin' '' album. Barry Mann (born Barry Imberman; February 9, 1939) is an American songwriter and musician, and part of a successful songwriting partnership with his wife, Cynthia Weil. He has written or co-written 53 hits in the UK and 98 in the US. Early life Mann was born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York City, United States. He was born two days before fellow songwriter Gerry Goffin. Mickey Jones (June 10, 1941 – February 7, 2018) was an American musician and actor. He played drums with acts such as Trini Lopez and Bob Dylan, with whom he played on his 1966 world tour. He became a founding member of The First Edition with singer Kenny Rogers, and played on all of their albums. Overall, Jones played on 17 gold records from his musical career of over two decades. After the break-up of The First Edition in 1976, Jones concentrated on his career as a character actor, where he made many appearances in film and television. Terry Williams (musician)
Terry Williams is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. He formed the band The First Edition with musicians Kenny Rogers, Mike Settle, and Thelma Camacho. He is the only member of the group other than Rogers to play on every album by the band. Williams grew up in Hollywood, California. His father played trombone for the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and his mother, Bonnie Lou Williams, was a vocalist in Dorsey's band. While working for the promotion department at Warner Bros. Records, he found he could not play guitar at work, so he joined the New Christy Minstrels. There he met the other members of what would become The First Edition. Williams taught Rogers to play electric bass, as Rogers had only played upright bass before. He co-wrote songs with Rogers such as "Momma's Waiting," and produced many of their songs. Mary Arnold (singer)
Mary Margaret Arnold (born September 19, 1947 in Carroll, Iowa) is an American singer. She performed with the rock group Kenny Rogers and The First Edition from 1968 to 1976. While at Drake University, Arnold had her own TV show. While studying at the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, Arnold auditioned for the show choir The Young Americans. She took a year off of school and toured with the group, meeting fellow singer Kenny Rogers. Her roommate was singer Thelma Camacho, who sang with Rogers in the band The First Edition. After Camacho was dismissed from the band, Arnold took her spot in the band, beating out Karen Carpenter for the role. She stayed with the band until it disbanded in 1976. Thelma Camacho
Thelma Camacho Ivie is an American opera and rock and roll singer known for her membership in the groups the New Christy Minstrels and the First Edition. As a teenager in San Diego, California, Camacho was Miss Teen San Diego and sang in Starlight Theater productions. She sang lead with the San Diego Civic Light Opera by the age of 14. She turned down a scholarship to study opera in Milan, joining The Young Americans and then the New Christy Minstrels. At age 18, in 1967 Camacho and Kenny Rogers formed the First Edition with Mike Settle, Mickey Jones, and Terry Williams. Camacho sang lead on songs such as "I Get a Funny Feeling", notably on ''The Smothers Brothers Show'' and ''The Ed Sullivan Show'' in 1968.
