''Roxy by Proxy'' is a live album by Frank Zappa, recorded in December 1973 at The Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, California and released posthumously in March 2014 by The Zappa Family Trust on Zappa Records. History In September 1974, parts of the five shows on December 8, 9 & 10, 1973 (early and late shows on 9th and 10th) at The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, California were released on the double-LP set ''Roxy & Elsewhere'', along with music recorded a few months later (on May 8, 1974, at the Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania and on May 11, 1974, at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Illinois), with all of that material being overdubbed and remixed. Roxy The Soundtrack
''Roxy the Soundtrack'' is the CD companion released in the ''Roxy: The Movie'', DVD/CD and Blu-ray/CD sets. The CD soundtrack is not sold separately. Background The film used to produce the movie was shot in 1973 using four cameras at five live shows performed on December 8, 9 and 10 (early and late shows on the 9th and 10th). What wasn't known at the time was due to a malfunction the audio and video were recorded out of sync. As John Albanian discusses in the liner notes, the problem was such that not until today's technology could the issue be painstakingly resolved. This is the third time around for the music from the Roxy shows. In 1974 ''Roxy & Elsewhere'' released some of the tracks from these shows and a few others. Then the 2014 ''Roxy by Proxy'' release made available more tracks exclusively from the December dates and all different from any on the previous release. Chester Thompson
Chester Cortez Thompson (born December 11, 1948) is an American drummer best known for his tenures with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, Weather Report, Santana, the progressive rock band Genesis and Phil Collins as a solo artist. Thompson has performed with his jazz group, the Chester Thompson Trio, since 2011. Early life Thompson was born on December 11, 1948, in Baltimore, Maryland. He has an older brother, who played in the drum corps. At elementary school, he learned to play the flute and read music. At eleven, Thompson took up the drums, receiving lessons from James Harrison, a professional jazz drummer from whom he learned his rudiments. Tenor Sax
The tenor saxophone is a medium-sized member of the saxophone family, a group of instruments invented by Adolphe Sax in the 1840s. The tenor and the alto are the two most commonly used saxophones. The tenor is pitched in the key of B (while the alto is pitched in the key of E), and written as a transposing instrument in the treble clef, sounding an octave and a major second lower than the written pitch. Modern tenor saxophones which have a high F key have a range from A2 to E5 (concert) and are therefore pitched one octave below the soprano saxophone. People who play the tenor saxophone are known as "tenor saxophonists", "tenor sax players", or "saxophonists". Napoleon Murphy Brock (born June 7, 1945) is an American singer, saxophonist and flute player who is best known for his work with Frank Zappa in the 1970s, including the albums '' Apostrophe (')'', ''Roxy & Elsewhere'', ''One Size Fits All'', and ''Bongo Fury''. He contributed notable vocal performances to the Zappa songs "Village of the Sun," "Cheepnis," and "Florentine Pogen." Bruce Fowler
Bruce Lambourne Fowler (born July 10, 1947) is an American trombonist and composer. He played trombone on many Frank Zappa records, as well as with Captain Beefheart and in the Fowler Brothers Band. He composes and arranges music for movies, and has been the composer, orchestrator, or conductor for many popular films. He is the son of jazz educator William L. Fowler and the brother of multi-instrumentalist Walt Fowler and bassist Tom Fowler. Bruce Fowler is participating in the Band from Utopia, the Mar Vista Philharmonic, and Jon Larsen's Strange News from Mars, featuring Zappa alumni Tommy Mars and Arthur Barrow. Ruth Underwood
Ruth Underwood (born Ruth Komanoff; May 23, 1946) is an American musician best known for playing xylophone, marimba, vibraphone, and other percussion instruments in Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. She collaborated with the Mothers of Invention from 1968 to 1977. Life and career Underwood began her music training in the classical tradition, studying both at Ithaca College under Warren Benson and at Juilliard under Saul Goodman (timpani) and Morris Goldenberg (percussion). Throughout 1967, she kept a regular attendance at the Garrick Theater in New York City when Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention were the resident band. Thomas W. Fowler (born June 10, 1951) is an American bass guitarist and musician. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, he has played with It's a Beautiful Day, Frank Zappa, The Mothers of Invention, Jean-Luc Ponty, Ray Charles, Steve Hackett, and many others. George Duke
George M. Duke (January 12, 1946 – August 5, 2013) was an American keyboardist, composer, singer-songwriter and record producer. Cheepnis
"Cheepnis" is a song by Frank Zappa and The Mothers, which is a tribute to low-budget monster movies. The song first appeared on Zappa's 1974 live album ''Roxy & Elsewhere''. On the Roxy recording Zappa introduces the song with a spoken monologue about his love of the 1956 film ''It Conquered The World'' and horror movies in general. Zappa also says that "cheapness, in the case of a monster movie, has nothing to do with the budget of the film, although it helps". Description The lyrics describe a monster, named "Frunobulax", a very large poodle dog. The poodle is a recurring theme in Zappa songs and is an example of "conceptual continuity" in his work. In ''The Real Frank Zappa Book'', Zappa reveals that Frunobulax was inspired by his pet sheepdog Fruney. Cheepnis was also a part of Zappa's unreleased "Hunchentoot" stage musical written in 1972. Inca Roads (song)
"Inca Roads" is the opening track of the Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention 1975 album, ''One Size Fits All''. The song features unusual time signatures, lyrics and vocals. The marimba-playing of Zappa's percussionist Ruth Underwood is featured prominently. The song was played in concert from 1970 to 1976, 1979 and 1988. Themes "Inca Roads" for the most part explores the stereotypes of aliens encountering the Incan civilization. These themes, like the album cover of ''One Size Fits All'' seem to parody the spirituality of many progressive rock albums around the same era. The lyrics "Did a vehicle come from somewhere out there, just to land in the Andes? Was it round and did it have a motor or was it something different?" imply that a UFO is landing in the Andes Mountains. As the song progresses, the lyrics become sillier and seem to mock the beginning of the song.
