Roxborough is a former estate and now a small community south of Mandeville in Manchester, Jamaica. It was the birthplace of Jamaican National Hero and politician Norman Washington Manley. History of the estate and great house The estate was originally called "Roxbro Castle". Over the years the great house became derelict until, despite renovation proposals, it was destroyed by fire in 1968. there are again proposals from the Jamaica National Heritage Trust to restore the building. Roxborough Castle
Roxborough Castle was a castle in Moy, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland originally built in 1738. It was the seat of the Earls of Charlemont, along with Charlemont Fort, and was burned out by the Irish Republican Army in 1922. Originally built in the 18th century it was remodelled by architect William Murray in 1842 for the second earl of Charlemont. Wings were added of one bay and two storeys over a basement, running the full length of the original block; these were in Murray's rather restrained Italianate style. The original block was given triangular window pediments and similar features so as to match the new wings. The entrance was moved round to the side of one of these wings, which became the new entrance front consisting of three bays with a low portico. The result was a house in the style of a French château. A conservatory, by Richard Turner, was added between c. 1850 and 1855. Elsie P. Roxborough (1914 – October 2, 1949) was a mixed-race writer, stylist and Detroit socialite who changed her name to Mona Manet to pass as a white woman. She wrote a gossip column and covered cultural events for the ''Detroit Guardian.'' John Walter Roxborough (February 21, 1892 - December 13, 1975) was an American bookmaker, boxing manager and professional sports gambler who, alongside boxing promoter Julian Black, managed the career of Joe Louis. Roxborough and Black were responsible for developing Louis' public image from Louis' rise from amateur status to the end of his heavyweight career in 1949. Early life Roxborough was one of four children born to lawyer Charles A. Roxborough II (1856-1908) and Virginia Gertrude Roxborough (1863-1935) in Plaquemine, Louisiana, both of whom were of European and African descent.
