Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (Portuguese: ''Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas'') is a lagoon in the district of Lagoa, Rio de Janeiro, Lagoa in the Zona Sul (South Zone) area of Rio de Janeiro. Sandra Khumalo
Sandra Khumalo (born 4 April 1981) is a South African rower who competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and has qualified for the 2016 Games. Personal life In 2005, at the age of 24, Khumalo was injured in a car accident. Whilst travelling to her job in a safari lodge at the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga, the Land Rover she was travelling in was hit by a truck. The accident damaged her spinal cord and left her lower body paralysed. Khumalo and her husband Siba have two daughters. Rowing Following her accident Khumalo moved to Durban, where her husband was starting a new job, and in 2008 she took up swimming to improve her upper body strength. She was then approached by Midlands Rowing Club in 2010 who were looking for athletes. She began training with a coach in Pietermaritzburg, 90 km away from Durban. Rowing At The 2016 Summer Paralympics
Rowing competitions at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio were held from 9 to 11 September 2016, at Lagoa Stadium at the Games' Copacabana hub. Classification Rowers are given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allows rowers to compete against others with a similar level of function. The three rowing classes are: *LTA (Legs, Trunk and Arms) - Mixed coxed fours *TA (Trunk and Arms) - Mixed double sculls *AS (Arms and shoulders) - Men's and women's singles Events Four rowing events are scheduled to be held, each over a course of 1000 metres: *Men's single sculls AS *Women's single sculls AS *Mixed double sculls TA *Mixed four coxed LTA Qualification Ninety-six athletes (48 male, 48 female) are expected to take part in this sport. Liudmila Vauchok ( be, Людмілa Ваўчок, russian: Людмила Волчек, born 19 June 1981) is Belarusian Paralympian. She competed at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, winning a silver medal, and at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, winning a bronze medal. She qualified for the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Jacqueline "Jacqui" Kapinowski (born November 28, 1962) is a two-time American Paralympian who competed in wheelchair curling at the 2010 Winter Paralympics and in rowing at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Personal life Kapinowski was born in Belleville, New Jersey, on November 28, 1962. Raised in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, she attended Point Pleasant Borough High School. She had bacterial meningitis at ages 23 and 28 and started having seizures at age 35. At the age of 39 she was diagnosed with stiff person syndrome (SPS), a neurological disease that results in her needing to use a wheelchair as it makes walking painful and causes seizures and spasms. It has also resulted in broken ribs and vertebrae. In 2014 she was diagnosed with thyroid and throat cancer but reports being cancer-free in 2017. She is married with two sons and a grandson. Rachel Morris (born 25 April 1979) is a British Paralympic sportswoman who has won Paralympic gold medals in both cycling and rowing. She took a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Paralympics as a handcyclist, and eight years later at Rio she won gold in the women's single sculls as a rower.
