Rowing At The 1979 Pan American Games
Rowing is the act of propelling a human-powered watercraft using the sweeping motions of oars to displace water and generate reaction (physics), reactional propulsion. Rowing is functionally similar to paddling, but rowing requires oars to be mechanically attached to the boat, and the rower drives the oar like a lever, exerting force in the ''same'' direction as the boat's travel; while paddles are completely hand-held and have no attachment to the boat, and are driven like a cantilever, exerting force ''opposite'' to the intended direction of the boat. In some strict terminologies, using oars for propulsion may be termed either "pulling" or "rowing", with different definitions for each. Where these strict terminologies are used, the definitions are reversed depending on the context. Mauro Javier dos Santos (born 7 July 1989), known as Mauro dos Santos, is an Argentine footballer who plays as a defender for Real Avilés in the Segunda Federación. Club career Born in Santo Tomé, Mauro graduated from Banfield's youth setup, and made his professional debut on 22 June 2008, in a 2–3 away defeat against River Plate. Christine Ernst is an American former rower. She was in 1986 World Rowing Championships and won gold in the women's lightweight doubles event. She led protest a 1976 at Yale University about the inadequate facilities provided to the women's crew—the first such challenge under Title IX. Early life Ernst was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her family moved to Scituate, Massachusetts when she was a young child. She trained in gymnastics where she challenged, and beat, the boys in her high school in arm wrestling matches in order to get use of the equipment. She attended Yale University, receiving an undergraduate degree in 1976. Rowing Ernst began rowing her sophomore year in college, and by her senior year she was captain of the women's crew (rowing team). Blair Horn (born July 17, 1961) is a Canadian former rower, who was a member of the Canadian men's eights team that won the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.
