Competition format The competition consisted of two main rounds (heats and finals) as well as a repechage. The 10 boats were divided into two heats for the first round, with 5 boats in each heat. The first-place boat in each heat (2 boats total) advanced directly to the "A" final. The remaining 8 boats were placed in the repechage. The repechage featured two heats, with 4 boats in each heat. Viorica Susanu (born 29 October 1975 in Galaţi) is a Romanian rower and winner of four Olympic Gold medals. Susanu rowed in the Romanian women's eight that won the World Rowing Championships in 1997, 1998 and 1999, and the 2000 Summer Olympics. Angela Alupei ( Tamaş, born 1 May 1972) is a Romanian Olympic rower, born in Bacău, Romania. She has been rowing since she was 17 years of age. When not competing, she is a police officer. Bronwyn Roye (born 18 July 1970 in Sydney) is an Australian former rower. She is a six-time national champion, a medalist at World Championships and a dual Olympian who raced in two Australian sculling events at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Club and state rowing Roye's senior club rowing was initially from the St George Rowing Club on Sydney's Cooks River and then from the UTS Haberfield Rowing Club. Roye made state selection for New South Wales in 1994 in the state women's coxless four to contest the ULVA Trophy at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. In 1995 she was the New South Wales single sculls entrant selected to race for the Nell Slatter Trophy at the Interstate Regatta. Club and state rowing Hatzakis' senior club rowing was from the Queensland University Boat Club in Brisbane and later at the UTS Haberfield Rowing Club in Sydney. From 1993 to 1996 and in 2000 Hatzakis was selected as Queensland's single sculls representative to contest the Nell Slatter Trophy at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. Sally Newmarch (born 2 June 1975), now known as Sally Callie, is an Australian former rower – a four-time national champion, a medal winning national representative who competed at World Rowing Championships from 1993 to 2004 and a three time Olympian. Club and state rowing Newmarch attended Annesley College in Adelaide where she took up rowing. Her senior club rowing was from the Torrens Rowing Club in Adelaide.
