Rowing At The 1968 Summer Olympics – Men's Double Sculls
The men's double sculls competition at the 1968 Summer Olympics took place at took place at Xochimilco#Other landmarks, Virgilio Uribe Rowing and Canoeing Course, Mexico. Competition format This rowing competition consisted of three main rounds (heats, semifinals, and finals), as well as a repechage round that allowed teams that did not win their heats to advance to the semifinals. All races were 2,000 metres in distance. * Heats: Three heats. With 13 boats entered, there were four or five boats per heat. The top three boats in each heat (total of 9 boats) advanced directly to the semifinals; all other boats (4 boats) went to the repechage. * Repechage: One heat. There were 4 boats in the repechage. Aleksandr Timoshinin
Aleksandr Ivanovich Timoshinin (russian: Александр Иванович Тимошинин, 20 May 1948 – 26 November 2021) was a Russian Rowing (sport), rower, born in Moscow, who competed for the Soviet Union in the 1968 Summer Olympics and in the 1972 Summer Olympics. In 1968 he and his partner Anatoliy Sass won the gold medal in the double sculls event. Four years later he won his second gold medal this time with his partner Gennadi Korshikov in the double sculls competition. Timoshinin died on 26 November 2021, at the age of 73. Martin Studach
Martin Andreas Studach (17 May 1944 – 24 March 2007) was a Swiss rower who competed in the 1964 Summer Olympics and the 1968 Summer Olympics. Studach was born in Küsnacht, Zurich, the son of Eugen Studach who had been a champion single sculler in the 1930s and 1940s. He rowed for Grasshopper Club, Zurich. Studach partnered Melchior Bürgin in the Double scull rowing for Switzerland at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo when they came fourth. At the age of 20, Studach was Switzerland's youngest competitor. Over next three years, Studach and Burgin dominated the double sculls scene. In 1965 they won the Double Sculls Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. and the European Championships. In 1966 they won the World Championships. Melchior Rudolf Bürgin (born 17 October 1943) is a former Swiss rower who competed at the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics. Bürgin partnered Martin Studach in the double sculls rowing for Switzerland at the 1964 Summer Olympics when they came fourth. Over next three years, Bürgin and Studach dominated the double sculls scene. In 1965 they won the Double Sculls Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta and the European Championships. In 1966 they won the World Championships. They won the European Championships and the double sculls at Henley again in 1967. Bürgin and Studach rowed in the double sculls for Switzerland at the 1968 Summer Olympics, but at the altitude in Mexico Studach suffered a collapse through over-exertion in the heats.
