Rotch And Tilden
Rotch & Tilden was an American architectural firm active in Boston, Massachusetts from 1880 through 1895. The firm was organized by partners Arthur Rotch and George Thomas Tilden. Both had studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Both had worked at the architectural firm of " Ware and Brunt". They were called "society architects” because of their families and their clientele. The firm was perhaps best known for lavish summer houses in Bar Harbour, Maine and for townhouses lining Commonwealth Avenue in the Back Bay area of Boston. According to architectural historian Harry Katz, "Rotch and Tilden developed an 'increasingly sophisticated blending of Georgian and Federal forms.” Two private residences in Montreal display an exhibit an eclectic blend of Jacobean and Richardsonian Romanesque styles. Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory
The Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory in Milton, Massachusetts is the foremost structure associated with the history of weather observations in the United States. Located atop Great Blue Hill about 10 miles south of Boston, Massachusetts, it is home to the oldest continuous weather record in North America, and was the location of the earliest kite soundings of the atmosphere in North America in the 1890s, as well as the development of the radiosonde in the 1930s. Founded by Abbott Lawrence Rotch in 1884, the observatory took a leading role in the newly emerging science of meteorology and was the scene of many of the first scientific measurements of upper atmosphere weather conditions, using kites to carry weather instruments aloft. Burton Harrison
Burton Norvell Harrison (July 14, 1838 – March 29, 1904), was a lawyer, American Democratic politician, and private secretary to Confederate States of America president Jefferson Davis. Harrison's support for the pro-slavery South countered against his father's support for anti-slavery. Early life Harrison was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Jesse Burton Harrison (who died three years later) and Frances Anne Brand Harrison. He attended the University of Mississippi from 1854 to 1855. In 1859 he graduated from Yale University, where he was a member of Skull and Bones. Later that year he took a job at the University of Mississippi as an associate professor of mathematics and began to study law. The George Griswold Frelinghuysen Arboretum (127 acres) is an arboretum located at 353 East Hanover Avenue, Morris Township, New Jersey. It is open daily without charge. It is also the headquarters of the Morris County Parks Commission. The arboretum features thematic collections of plant life, including ornamental grasses, spring-blooming shrubs and perennials, summer shrubs and cutbacks, fall fruit and foliage, shade trees, and a garden called the "promising plants garden" which has underused plants supplied by nurseries, growers, and breeders.
