Little Auk
The little auk or dovekie (''Alle alle'') is a small auk, the only member of the genus ''Alle''. ''Alle'' is the Sami name of the long-tailed duck; it is onomatopoeic and imitates the call of the drake duck. Linnaeus was not particularly familiar with the winter plumages of either the auk or the duck, and appears to have confused the two species. Other common names include rotch, rotche, and sea dove, although this last sometimes refers to a different auk, the Black Guillemot, instead. It breeds on islands in the high Arctic. There are two subspecies: ''A. a. alle'' breeds in Greenland, Novaya Zemlya and Svalbard, and ''A. a. polaris'' on Franz Josef Land. A small number of individuals breed on Little Diomede Island in the Bering Strait with additional breeding individuals thought to occur on King Island, St. Lawrence Island, St. Matthew Island and the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea. Abbott Lawrence Rotch (January 6, 1861 – April 7, 1912) was an American meteorologist and founder of the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory, the longest continually operating observation site in the United States and an important site for world climatology. Early life Abbott Lawrence Rotch was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 6, 1861. As a young man, Rotch became interested in the newly developing science of meteorology and determined to make this field his lifetime career. By the time he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1884, Rotch had conceived and carried into execution his plans for erecting a meteorological observatory on the summit of the Great Blue Hill, south of Boston in the Blue Hills Reservation, a 6,000 acre (24 km²) public park managed by the Metropolitan District Commission of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Milton, Massachusetts. Arthur Rotch
Arthur Rotch (May 13, 1850 – August 15, 1894) was an American architect active in Boston, Massachusetts. Early life Rotch was born in Milton, Massachusetts to Benjamin Smith Rotch (1817-1882) and Annie Bigelow Lawrence (1820-1893). His was a prominent Boston family whose roots went back to Nantucket and New Bedford whaling and shipping interests in the 18th century. His maternal grandfather, Abbott Lawrence, was minister to Great Britain and one of the founders of Lawrence, Massachusetts. He studied humanities at Harvard College for four years, graduating in 1871, and spent two years (1872-1873) at MIT. He then worked as a draftsman at the firm of Ware and Brunt. Francis Michael Durango Magalona (October 4, 1964 – March 6, 2009), also known by the moniker Francis M, was a Filipino rapper, singer, songwriter, entrepreneur, actor, and television personality.
