RooArt
rooArt was an Australian independent record label, founded in 1988 by INXS's then-manager, Chris Murphy. The label's roster included several well-known Australian bands and artists such as Crow, Ratcat, Screaming Jets, You Am I, Wendy Matthews, The Hummingbirds, The Trilobites and Amanda Brown. Other bands which made early or first releases on the rooArt label included Hipslingers, The Last Metro, The Lab, The Fauves, Bellicose and Custard. rooArt released a series of three compilation albums of new or then-unsigned acts, called ''Youngblood''. A number of acts released on the compilations went on to record their own albums, including Tall Tales and True, The Trilobites and Martha’s Vineyard. Ratcat
Ratcat are an Australian indie rock band from Sydney who formed in 1985. The band is fronted by mainstay vocalist and guitarist, Simon Day. Their combination of indie pop song writing and energetic punk-style guitar rock won them fans from both the indie and skate-punk communities. They found mainstream success with their extended play, ''Tingles'' (October 1990), album '' Blind Love'' (June 1991) and the single, "Don't Go Now" (April), which all reached No. 1 on the ARIA Charts during 1991. The band released two subsequent albums that did not match their earlier chart success. Ratcat ceased performing live regularly in the late 1990s; however, they continue to perform sporadically. Martha's Vineyard (band)
Martha's Vineyard were an Independent music, Alternative rock, Australian rock band, formed in Perth, Western Australia, Perth in May 1986 by lead vocals, lead singer, Peggy Van Zalm. In June 1989 the group issued their debut self-titled album on rooArt, which was produced by Nick Mainsbridge. It peaked in the top 100 on the Kent Music Report Albums Chart. Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, described their sound as "reflective folk rock [which] mixed melancholy vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, gentle percussion and spacious arrangements to arrive at a harmonious and intriguing whole". They shared a similar sound and outlook to that of fellow Perth bands like The Triffids, The Honeys and Chad's Tree. Tall Tales And True
Tall Tales and True were an Australian three piece band from Sydney formed in the early 1980s by Perth born musician, Matthew de la Hunty. They're best known for their 1992 album, ''Revenge!'', which peaked inside the ARIA top 50. Biography 1983–1988: Formation and Early recordings Matthew de la Hunty travelled to Sydney in 1983 and formed a group with Paul Miskin (bass) and Willie McCracken (drums). This unnamed outfit played only one gig at French's Tavern. Dave Rashleigh (drums) was asked by Miskin to join in 1984 to replace McCracken and they then became Tall Tales and True. The band became a regular attraction on the inner-city circuit. The Trilobites
The Trilobites were an Australian power pop/rock band formed in Sydney in June 1984. The original members of the Trilobites were Mike Dalton on vocals, Scott Leighton on bass guitar, Martin Martini & Paul Skates on guitars and Paul Styman on drums. Their first two singles, "Venus in Leather"' and "American TV" reached number 1 on the alternative chart. You Am I are an Australian alternative rock band, fronted by its lead singer-songwriter and guitarist, Tim Rogers. The Lab (band)
The Lab were an Australian Sydney-based electronic music band consisting of keyboardist Paul Mac, vocalist Yolanda Podolski and vocalist and bassist Warwick Factor. The band was started by Paul Mac and Tristan Mason and an early lineup included two bass players. The name came about when one of them was listening to an Eric B and Rakim album which had the vocal line in it: "Back to the lab" which, according to Mason: "described our after gig practices, as in lets go back to The Lab, which was where me, Paul and Yolanda all lived." The Hummingbirds
The Hummingbirds were an Australian indie pop and jangle pop band from Sydney, who formed in 1986 from Bug Eyed Monsters. They were one of the most highly regarded outfits to emerge from Sydney's inner-city scene during the late 1980s and were an early signing to the rooArt label. The Hummingbirds' single, "Blush", peaked at No.19 on the ARIA singles charts in 1989. They left rooArt in 1992, and disbanded in 1993. Biography The Hummingbirds formed in 1986 from the remnants of the short lived band Bug Eyed Monsters. Screaming Jets
The Screaming Jets are an Australian hard rock band formed in Newcastle, Australia, in 1989 by frontman Dave Gleeson (vocals), Paul Woseen (bass guitar), Grant Walmsley (guitar)Richard Lara(guitar), and Brad Heaney (drums). The Mandelbrot Set (band)
The Mandelbrot Set were an indie/powerpop band from Adelaide, South Australia, who rose to prominence during the "shoegaze" era of the early 1990s. They released two EPs through Ra Records (a subsidiary of rooArt) before their break-up in 1994. History The band formed in 1990 when school friends Tim Mortimer (guitar/vocals) and Brian Pyper (guitar) met Adam McBeath (ex-Artisans), a guitarist who agreed to join on bass. With the addition of drummer Michael Bajer, plus occasional violinist Christie Scardigno, the line-up was settled. Chris Murphy (manager)
Christopher Mark "CM" Murphy (9 November 1954 – 16 January 2021) was an Australian music and multimedia entrepreneur. He was the band manager for INXS (late 1979 to June 1995, December 2008 to November 2012) and Models (from late 1984 to mid-1987). He died on 16 January 2021, aged 66, following a battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma. Early life Christopher Mark Murphy was born on 9 November 1954 and grew up in Darlinghurst. His father, Mark Murphy, had run a theatrical booking agency, Mark Murphy & Associates, in Wollongong since 1960. A year after Mark died in 1969, Murphy, at the age of 16, joined his mother in running the agency but shifted its focus to rock music acts. Phantom Records
Phantom Records was an Australian record store and independent record label established in 1978 by Dare Jennings and Jules R.B. Normington. Phantom Records was one of Australia's first indie labels, and the store was known for its guerilla marketing strategies. History Phantom Records opened on 17 October 1978 as a record store on Pitt Street in Sydney. The store was opened by Jennings in partnership with former White Light Records staff Lee Taylor and John Foy. Wendy Joan Matthews (born 13 January 1960) is a Canadian-born Australian singer-songwriter who has been a member of Models and Absent Friends and is a solo artist.
