1997 Hopman Cup
The Hopman Cup IX corresponds to the ninth edition of the Hopman Cup tournament between nations in men's and women's tennis. The tournament was played between 29 December 1996 and 4 January 1997 at the Burswood Dome in Perth, Western Australia. Eight teams competed for the title. Croatia were the 1996 champions but they lost in the group stage. The United States took the title after beating South Africa in the final.This was the first year that the tournament was sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation. 2010 Hopman Cup
The Hopman Cup XXII (also known as the Hyundai Hopman Cup for sponsorship reasons) corresponds to the 22nd edition of the Hopman Cup tournament between nations in men's and women's tennis. The tournament started on 2 January 2010 at the Burswood Dome in Perth, Western Australia. Eight nations competed. They were formed of one man and one woman from the same nation. The nations were split into two pools of four with the group winners contesting the final. Slovakia were the defending champions but were not invited to participate in 2010, whilst Kazakhstan qualified for the event by winning the Asian Hopman Cup. Spain won their third title, defeating Great Britain in the final 2–1. Irina Spîrlea (born 26 March 1974) is a retired tennis player from Romania who turned professional in 1990. She won four singles and six doubles titles. Spîrlea reached her career-high ranking on the WTA Tour on 13 October 1997, when she became No. 7 in the world. She retired in 2000. Victor Hănescu (born 21 July 1981) is a former Romanian tennis player. His career-high singles ranking was world no. 26. Professional career Hănescu attained a career-high singles ranking of No. 26 on 6 July 2009. In a Davis Cup match against the United States, he suffered a severe rib injury, and a subsequent injury sidelined him further in May 2006. The Hopman Cup is an international eight-team indoor hardcourt tennis tournament that played mixed-gender teams on a country-by-country basis.It was held in Perth, Western Australia each year from 1989 to 2019, before being replaced on the calendar in 2020 by the now defunct ATP Cup. It is set to return in July 2023 in Nice, France. Burswood Dome
The Dome at Crown Perth (originally the Burswood Superdome and formerly the Burswood Dome) was a multipurpose indoor arena used for sports and entertainment. The dome was in size, with seating for 13,600 people. The whole arena was pressurised so that the fibreglass roof was suspended above the ground. It was a venue for indoor sports, notably the Hopman Cup tennis tournament, which was moved to the Perth Arena for the 2013 and future events, and for pop music concerts. Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. Marc Rosset (born 7 November 1970) is a Swiss former professional tennis player. He is best known for winning the men's singles gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics. He also won a major doubles title, at the French Open in 1992 partnering compatriot Jakob Hlasek. Career Rosset turned professional in 1988 and won his first tour singles title in 1989 in Geneva as a wildcard, defeating Guillermo Pérez Roldán. His first doubles title was won in Geneva as well in 1991 with partner Sergi Bruguera. 1992 was the pinnacle of Rosset's career. Henry Christian Hopman CBE (12 August 1906 – 27 December 1985) was an Australian tennis player and coach. Early life Harry Hopman was born on 12 August 1906 in Glebe, Sydney as the third child of John Henry Hopman, a schoolteacher, and Jennie Siberteen, née Glad. His family then moved to Parramatta. Hopman started playing tennis at the age of 13 and, playing barefoot, won an open singles tournament on a court in the playground of Rosehill Public School where his father was headmaster.
