The Catholic Church in Mauritius is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. There are just over 300,000 Catholics in Mauritius, about a quarter of the total population. Tamarin
The tamarins are squirrel-sized New World monkeys from the family Callitrichidae in the genus ''Saguinus''. They are the first offshoot in the Callitrichidae tree, and therefore are the sister group of a clade formed by the lion tamarins, Goeldi's monkeys and marmosets. Taxonomy and evolutionary history Hershkovitz (1977) recognised ten species in the genus ''Saguinus'', further divided into 33 morphotypes based on facial pelage. A later classification into two clades was based on variations in dental measurements. A taxonomic review (Rylands et al., 2016) showed the tamarins are a sister group to all other callitrichids, branching off 15–13 million years ago. Pamplemousses District
Pamplemousses () is a district of Mauritius, located in the north west of the island, and is one of the most densely populated parts of the island. The name of the district comes from the French word for grapefruits. The district has an area of 178.7 km2 and the population estimate was at 139,966 as of 31 December 2015. Places of interest The district hosts the SSR botanical garden, or Jardin Botanique Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, renamed in 1988 in honor of the first prime minister of Mauritius. The garden was first constructed by Pierre Poivre (1719–1786) in 1770. The area is 25 hectares. The garden features spices, ebonies, sugar canes and many more. Baie Du Tombeau
Baie-du-Tombeau is a village in Mauritius located in the Pamplemousses District, situated near the Rivière du Tombeau. The village is administered by the Baie-du-Tombeau Village Council under the aegis of the Pamplemousses District Council. According to the census made by Statistics Mauritius in 2011, the population was at 14,687. Baie-Tombeau was home to HMS Mauritius, a Royal Navy wireless station. The bay itself faces west to North-West and has 3 km of coral reef protecting a shallow lagoon and sandy beaches stretching from Rivulet Terre rouge bird sanctuary to the Tombeau river's estuary at Le goulet. Le Morne
Le Morne Brabant is a peninsula at the extreme southwestern tip of the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius on the western side of the island. It is highlighted by an eponymous basaltic monolith with a summit above sea level. The summit covers an area of over . There are many caves and overhangs on the steep slopes. It is largely surrounded by a lagoon and is a well known tourist attraction. It is also a refuge for two rare plants, the Mandrinette and the Boucle d'Oreille. The peninsula of Le Morne benefits from a micro-climate. The mountain is named after the VOC-ship (Dutch East India Company) ''Brabant'' that ran aground there on 29 December 1783 on the cliffs. Port Mathurin
The village of Port Mathurin serves as the capital of the island of Rodrigues, a dependency of Mauritius. Most of the population of Rodrigues settles close to or in the city. It lies on the north coast of the Indian Ocean island and functions as the administrative, judicial and economic centre of Rodrigues. As the name suggests, it also operates the main harbour of the island. Port Mathurin has a population of around 6,000 people (2006).
