The Roman Catholic Diocese of Canarias or Diocese Canariense-Rubicense ( la, Canarien(sis)) is a diocese located in the Canary Islands in the Ecclesiastical province of Seville in Spain. The dioceses includes the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote (Oriental Province). However, it does not include the whole archipelago, since the Diocese of Tenerife (or Nivariense) includes the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. For this reason, the use of the name of the archipelago is currently a very controversial topic in the Canary Islands. It has recently emerged between the society of Lanzarote the desire to recover the diocesan headquarters of San Marcial del Rubicón. Las Palmas Cathedral
The Cathedral of Santa Ana (Holy Cathedral-Basilica of Canary or Cathedral of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) is a Roman Catholic church located in Las Palmas, Canary Islands. The cathedral is the see of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Canarias. It is situated within the Vegueta neighborhood, next to the Plaza Mayor of Santa Ana. The feast of the cathedral's dedication is celebrated every November 26. The structure is considered the most important monument of Canarian religious architecture. History The present church was commenced in 1500, in the episcopate of Fr. Diego de Muros (d. 1524), dean of Santiago. He was third Bishop of Las Palmas. The architect was Don Diego Montaude. Pedro Fernández Manrique
Pedro Fernández Manrique (c. 1500–1540) was a Spanish Roman Catholic bishop and cardinal. Biography Pedro Fernández Manrique was born in Aguilar de Campoo ca. 1500, the son of Fernández Manrique, 2nd Marquis of Aguilar de Campoo and María Manrique de Lara, daughter of Manrique de Lara, 1st Duke of Nájera. He was educated at the University of Salamanca in the 1520s. In 1525, Charles I of Spain named him ''maestrescula'' of the cathedral chapter of Salamanca Cathedral, a post that also made him chancellor of the University of Salamanca. The cathedral chapter, however, elected Martín de Espinosa, an auditor of the Roman Rota, for the same position. Espinosa ultimately prevailed in the dispute over this double appointment. In compensation, Charles I of Spain in 1530 made him major chaplain of the Chapel of the New Monarchs in the Cathedral of Toledo. Don Pedro de Ayala also Pedro López Ayala (died 31 January 1513) was a 16th-century Spanish diplomat employed by Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile at the courts of James IV of Scotland and Henry VII of England. His mission to Scotland was concerned with the King's marriage and the international crisis caused by the pretender Perkin Warbeck. In his later career he supported Catherine of Aragon in England but was involved in a decade of rivalry with the resident Spanish ambassador in London. Ayala was a Papal prothonotary, Archdeacon of London, and Bishop of the Canary Islands. Sources in English reveal little of Ayala's background, however he was from the noble family of the Counts of Fuensalida in Toledo.
