The Roman Catholic Diocese of Butuan (Lat: ''Dioecesis Butuanensis'') is a diocese of the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines. History The Diocese was erected in 1967, through Pope Paul VI, separating from the Diocese of Surigao, the territory of the Diocese of Butuan is the Province of Agusan del Sur and Agusan del Norte and Most Rev. Carmelo Dominador Morelos became its first Bishop and the Diocese is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro. Butuan City
Butuan (pronounced ), officially the City of Butuan ( ceb, Dakbayan sa Butuan; Butuanon: ''Dakbayan hong Butuan''; fil, Lungsod ng Butuan), is a 1st class highly urbanized city in the region of Caraga, Philippines. It is the ''de facto'' capital of the province of Agusan del Norte where it is geographically situated but has an administratively independent government. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 372,910 people. It served as the former capital of the Rajahnate of Butuan before 1001 until about 1521. Agusan River
The Agusan River is third longest river in the Philippines, located in the north-eastern part of Mindanao island, draining majority of the Caraga region and some parts of Davao de Oro. It is the country's third largest river (after the Cagayan River and Rio Grande de Mindanao) with a total drainage area of and an estimated length of from its origin. Juan de Dios Mataflorida Pueblos (8 March 1943 – 21 October 2017) was a Roman Catholic bishop. Pueblos was born on 8 March 1943 in Moto Sur in the municipality of Loon, Bohol, Loon, Bohol. He studied at the Immaculate Heart Seminary in Tagbilaran and San Carlos Major Seminary. Pueblos was ordained to the priesthood on 30 March 1968 and was consecrated as bishop on 24 June 1985. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Davao by Pope John Paul II on 29 April 1985. He served in the post until 3 February 1987 while also simultaneously being the Titular episcopal see, Titular bishop of Zaba in Algeria. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Kidapawan from 3 February 1987 to 27 November 1995. Pueblos served as bishop of the Diocese of Butuan from 27 November 1995 until his death in 21 October 2017. Carmelo Dominador Flores Morelos
Carmelo Dominador Flores Morelos (December 12, 1930 – September 17, 2016) was a Filipino Roman Catholic archbishop. Ordained to the priesthood in 1954, Morelos was appointed as the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Butuan in the Philippines in 1967 serving the diocese until 1994 when he transferred to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Zamboanga. He served as the archdiocese's bishop until his retirement in 2006. Morelos also served at the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines as its president from 1991 to 1995 and was named the chairman of the Mindanao-Sulu Pastoral Conference twice.
