The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Papeete (Latin: ''Archidioecesis Papeetensis''; French: ''Archidiocèse de Papeete'') is a Metropolitan Archdiocese in French Polynesia. It is responsible for the suffragan diocese of Taiohae o Tefenuaenata. The diocese was elevated to the Archdiocese of Papeete in 1966. Notre Dame Cathedral, Papeete
Notre Dame Cathedral ( French: ''Cathédrale de Papeete Notre-Dame de L'Immaculée Conception'') is a late 19th-century church that serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Papeete. It is located close to the waterfront esplanade of the capital city on the rue du Général de Gaulle. The construction of the cathedral began in the middle of the 19th century and it opened in 1875. It is the oldest Catholic church in Tahiti and one of Papeete's last remaining examples of early colonial architecture. History In the 19th century, France began expanding its colonial empire into Asia and the Pacific Islands, declaring the Kingdom of Tahiti a protectorate in 1842. Archbishop Hubert Coppenrath (18 October 1930 – 31 July 2022) was a French Polynesian Roman Catholic prelate, who served as Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Papeete. Biography Coppenrath was born in Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest on 27 June 1957, in Tahiti. Coppenrath was an advocate for the Tahitian language and in 1974 he became one of the founding members of the Tahitian Academy. He was formally ordained as the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Papeete on 4 June 1999 after appointment by Pope John Paul II. He succeeded his own brother, Michel-Gaspard Coppenrath, as Archbishop. Monsignor Michel-Gaspard Coppenrath (4 June 1924 – 16 August 2008) was the Tahitian Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Papeete in French Polynesia for 26 years from 1973 until 1999. Coppenrath served as the Archbishop Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Papeete from 1999 until his death in 2008. Coppenrath was the first Tahitian-born Catholic bishop of French Polynesia. Early life Michel-Gaspard Coppenrath was born in Papeete, Tahiti and was a ''demi'', of half- Tahitian descent. He later moved to France, where he served as a member of the French Resistance against Nazi occupation during World War II before joining the priesthood. Coppenrath was ordained as a Catholic priest in Poitiers, France, on 29 June 1954, when he was thirty years old. Paul-Laurent-Jean-Louis Mazé, SS.CC. (1885–1976) was Archbishop, and later Archbishop Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Papeete, French Polynesia. Born on 4 April 1885 in Pleyben, France, he was ordained a priest in the order of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary on 25 September 1910, aged 25.
