Cake is an alternative rock band from Sacramento, California, consisting of singer John McCrea, trumpeter Vince DiFiore, guitarist Xan McCurdy, bassist Daniel McCallum, and drummer Todd Roper. The band has been noted for McCrea's sarcastic lyrics and deadpan vocals, and their wide-ranging musical influences, including norteño, country music, mariachi, rock, funk, folk music, and hip hop. Cake was formed in 1991 by McCrea, DiFiore, Greg Brown (guitar), Frank French (drums), and Shon Meckfessel (bass) who soon left and was replaced by Gabe Nelson. It was recorded at the Pus Cavern studio in Sacramento, California, and released through Capricorn Records on February 7, 1994. According to ''Pitchfork'' reviewer Madison Bloom, ''Motorcade of Geneoristy'' is a lo-fi album with "warm and close" songs that pull from different musical styles, such as honky-tonk and ranchera, and compared its style to "trailing notes down a stairwell into some subterranean tavern, where a cantina band plays over clinking pints." Music critic Daryl Cater deemed it an example of funky, guitar-oriented "quirk-rock" reminiscent of Phish's "genre-hopping jams". John McCrea (musician)
John McCrea (born June 25, 1964) is an American singer and musician. He is a founding member of the band Cake. He is the vocalist and primary lyricist for the band, in addition to playing acoustic guitar, vibraslap, and piano. He also programs drums and does mixing work while he and the rest of the band have produced all of their albums. Biography McCrea spent most of the 1980s playing in various bands or performing solo. His mid-1980s band John McCrea and the Roughousers recorded the songs "Love You Madly" and "Shadow Stabbing," which were later re-recorded by Cake (both featured on 2001's '' Comfort Eagle''). This band included Michael Urbano (drums), Pete Costello (bass), and Robert Kuhlmann (guitar). In the late 1980s, McCrea moved to Los Angeles and began playing acoustically in local coffee shops. KUDL (106.5 FM) is a radio station in Sacramento, California. Owned by Audacy, Inc., it broadcasts a Top 40 (CHR) format branded as ''106.5 The End''. Its studios are located in Foothill Farms (with a Sacramento address) and its transmitter is in Folsom. History KJML Origin The 106.5 frequency in Sacramento signed on in 1957 with the call letters KJML, which adopted a number of format changes before settling with the beautiful music format, commonly identified as "instrumental elevator music." Safetyville, USA is a Scale model, miniature city that spans a little over 3 acres of land in Sacramento, California. It is a program designed to provide safety education to young children in an interactive manner. The miniature town features scaled-down replicas of the California State Capitol building, municipal building, business buildings, and various streets in Sacramento, California. Founding Safetyville, USA is part of the non-profit Safety Center, Inc.'s Children's Safety Program, which provides life-saving safety skills and awareness education.
