Rocambole (1948 Film)
''Rocambole'' is a 1948 French-Italian historical thriller film directed by Jacques de Baroncelli and starring Pierre Brasseur, Sophie Desmarets and Lucien Nat.The A to Z of French Cinema p.39 It portrays the adventures of the popular character Rocambole. It was followed by a sequel ''The Revenge of Baccarat''. It was shot at the Scalera Studios in Rome. The film's sets were designed by the art directors René Moulaert and Ottavio Scotti. Jacques De Baroncelli
Jacques de Baroncelli (25 June 1881 – 12 January 1951) was a French film director best known for his silent films from 1915 to the late 1930s. He came from a Florence, Florentine family who had settled in Provence in the 15th century, occupying a building in the centre of Avignon then called the Baroncelli Palace (now the Palais du Roure). His father's side of the family were of Tuscany, Tuscan origin and part of the Guelphs and Ghibellines, Ghibelline tradition, and they were hereditary Marquis of Javon, Marquises of Javon. Though somewhat aristocratic, the family spoke Provençal (dialect), Provençal, which was rather controversial at a time when it was considered to be a language of the common people. His older brother was Folco de Baroncelli-Javon, He directed well over 80 films between 1915 and 1948 and in the 1940s released numerous films in the United States and Italy. Rocambole (character)
Rocambole () is a fictional adventurer created by Pierre Alexis Ponson du Terrail, a 19th-century French writer. The word ''rocambolesque'' has become common in French and other languages to label any kind of fantastic adventure. Overview The series introduces Rocambole as a highly resourceful adolescent, an orphan adopted by the wily crone Maman Fipart. He first assists the evil Andrea de Felipone, a.k.a. Sir Williams, in his fight against Andrea's half-brother, the Comte de Kergaz. A major protagonist in the battle is a courtesan with a heart of gold and a fearless temper, Louise Charmet, a.k.a. Baccarat. In the third novel of the series, Rocambole takes over and kills Sir Williams. But Baccarat again thwarts his evil schemes, and he ends up imprisoned in the hard labor camp of Toulon (like Jean Valjean in Victor Hugo's 1862 novel ''Les Misérables''.) Vittorio Sanipoli (1915–1992) was an Italian stage, film and television actor. He appeared in around a hundred films and television series between 1942 and 1980. Life and career Born Luciano Sanipoli in Genoa, he made his acting debut in 1939 in the Roman Calò's stage company Society of Mystery Shows. Loredana Padoan (19 March 1924 – 18 January 2016), best known just as Loredana, was an Italian film and stage actress.
